ok, we've talked about my hypersensitive-girl thing before, but I couldn't believe that guy was such an ass. He really gave me this pretentious BS that nobody should have to put up with.
yeah, they have great stock. but F* yellow jersey. Anyone that treats customers like that doesn't deserve customers.

The only shop I've found in the whole state where they seem to know anything about single speed or fixed gear is the West Hill Bike Shop in Putney. It's just west of the Route 91 exit, behind the yarn shop. They are especially keen on Cyclocross.

Hans is probably Sheldon Brown's long-lost nephew as far as knowledge of bike trivia and practical applications go. Not a lot in stock, but he's super-cool about ordering stuff with minimal markup.

Online (or in the magical land of bangers and mash):
Ribble Cycles (www.ribblecycles.co.uk)
I just ordered my stronglight track crank from them for 42GBP + 9GBP shipping. Comes out to about $80--way less than any american OBS for the same crank.
Other than the crank, they have good prices on other track stuff (and road stuff too), especially european gear. Shimano is more expensive than nashbar tho.
I was expecting to have to pay some import duty, but the guy at the post office never asked.

Cambridge Bicycles
Broadway Bicycles is good if you know how to fix your own, or need to learn.
Also, Boston Bicycles, sister shop to Cambridge Bicycles, is more BMX oriented but usually very empty and the people are willing to chat it up.

They are right up there with firehouse, trophy, and bicycle therapy......at least in my book.

Note I have not actually been in the shop yet because the guy sets his own hours (noon to 6pm most days). But Shaw's Lightweight Cycles on Washington St in Santa Clara has track frames and parts on display and written on their sign. Its the only LBS I've found that doesnt say ***** like "Trek bikes? We don't sell Trek, just Specialized" (direct quote when I asked about track hubs)... Might be a bit south for you, if so just go up to SF instead and pick from one of the many lovely shops other folks have mentioned.

Bikes: 2 roadies, 7 fixed-gears, 1 hardtail, 1 full suspension mtb, and 1 hybrid...so far.
I know of three fixie friendly shops in Raleigh, NC (including Rev Chuck's shop) and one in Durham.
All four have at least one employee that rides a fixie or single-speed.
It is more common to see a Bianchi Pista or Specialized Langster on display these days.
