They stock KHS Flite, but are mostly a BMX/urban/cruiser/snowboard shop. They are always happy to order parts. I always stop in and fill my tires there, because I can't get high enough PSI in my hand pump.

They are planning on increasing inventory for fixed and SS parts. This shop is aimed at high-tech roadies, but is never snooty. Last time I went, they only had cogs, but i know alot of people have gotten parts through them. If you need a good mechanic, go there. I should be getting Miche parts and some Chrome bags, I believe.

Anything used, it's there. They have oodles of parts, all organized in bins. I bought a pair of flat handlebars, grips and a white Selle/Bianchi saddle there, the total was $10.

All of these shops give discounts to couriers as well. I have been to every shop in the city, and found these to be my faves.

Anybody know of any decent shops in orange county ca? I know there's bill rons in redondo but i was wondering if there was anything closer for decent track gear. I'm visitng from eugene snapped a toeclip and I can't find a pair of metal toe clips here to save my life. cheers.

Sounds about right. I bought a set of those Nashbar Formula/Mavic wheels and put 'em on my old bike, but I haven't even taken them outside yet. They're just a TINY bit out of true...I'm wondering if I should make time to get them trued before doing a significant amount of riding this weekend. I'm less worried about efficiency/speed than I am with doing damage to the wheels.

as a general rule, machine-built wheels should be trued before riding, but you'll prolly be fine for the weekend.

or you could use this as an opportunity to learn to do it yerself

I know, I know--I've got the spoke wrench, absntr's invited me over to use his truing stand, everything. I just keep running out of time...and history has taught me that any *new* bike-related skill is going to take at least twice as long to learn as I initially expect it to.

I should have done it over Xmas. I'm kicking myself for that now.

yeah, the first one will take a little longer than it might, but since you're starting with mostly-true wheels it's a great way to learn.

Stopped by Shaw's Lightweight Cycles tonight to see about a new wheelset.. This store is the real deal. Both mechanics(/owners?) were super knowledgable about track bikes and fixed gear, they had some sweet, sweet phil hubs on the shelf, tons of track bikes on the stands, and even an old 1-inch chain pitch hub on the countertop as a conversation piece (I guess). I don't know if I am going to get the wheels built there or from Harris online yet, but I'll definitely be back...

i put this in the 'pyramid' thread too but what the hell -- after pokin around some i am digging the IRO-Aerohead straight from IRO. They want $50 more for the set than Harris wants for the rear alone. The shaw guys are huge Phil Wood fans and sexxxy as they are I can't justify paying more for a wheelset than I dropped on the whole bike.

These shops are probably both somewhere in this thread, but are worth mentioning again because I have dealt with them recently:

A few Chicago bike shops worth visiting:

1. Cycle Smithy: https://www.cyclesmithy.com/ If you are a bike geek, check out this shop. Stop by, take a look at the ceiling. The store has a bike museum hanging from the rafters! They also carry a stock of track bikes, not a fantastic selection, but the hanging bikes make a visit to this shop worthwhile.
2. Yojimbo's Garabge: https://yojimbosgarage.com/ Marcus runs a great shop, track friendly, tons of goodies in stock, and reasonable prices.

The guys at Upgrade in Chicago are snobby as Hell for the most part, and I guess they didn't want my money, strange, because everyone else does

In Chicago, I like Kozy's downtown on Lasalle, yeah yeah, I know they're more expensive, but their mechanics are kickass and treat repeat customers really well

If you live in or are visiting the Seattle, WA area the ONLY shop to goto for your track, fixie, or singlespeed needs is the Counterbalance Bicycle shop in lower Queen Anne 2 West Roy St. https://www.counterbalancebicycles.com/ They have also started to provide online sales, their unique thing is that they only post and sell items online that they HAVE IN STOCK so none of this "we'll get it for you crap but WE have to order it!!" Check'em out and say hi to Adam, Peter, or Jake when you stop in...

In North County, San Diego, check out Pacific Coast Cycles in Oceanside. Larry (I think?) who owns the place used to build frames for Masi in Carlsbad, and he's got an incredible selection of old Masi, Cinelli, Colnago, classic Italian stuff, plus a bunch of obscure handmade frames and all the sweet parts you need. The only spot in Northern SD where I could find fixie junk. Anyway, it's an awesome shop, a welcome change from the rich-weekender-wannabe-triathelete bike scene that's so prevalent down here. Coast Highway 101 just as you enter O'side from the South...
And while you're down here go to La Especial Norte in Leucadia for the best Mexican food you'll ever have in your life.
