Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Could always go to Bikes Not Bombs in Roxbury. My ride started off as a SS from them and I think it ran maybe around $200 or $250. Depends on if they have a frame kickin' around thats your size, etc. but definately give it a shot.

They built mine too, but for more than what I'd hoped for (400). I've just begun to change out the stock components they use. But they're cool and once you buy a bike from them you can use the tools for free during shop hours.

Irv's in Chicago is awesome. Not much fixed related stock, but incredible service. It is worthwhile for me to order through them and wait, they really deserve my business. Plenty of commuter stuff, and you can't beat the prices. Corner of 18th St. and Racine.

Just east of Vanier is Full Cycle. They cater mostly to roadies but they're great if you're in a jam. It's the closest LBS so I'm usually there just loitering. Good people.
+1 on Phat Moose. They've been awesome with helping me get my track/fixie set up just right.

This has probably been discussed here before, but I'll say it again. Anyone who lives in southern california and hasn't been to Bill Ron's needs to go. He's a super nice guy with a bunch of really nice bikes on the wall. A 72 Colagno track bike, another track bike from the 20s, and all kinds of other nice stuff.

Chicago people...might seem like a weird question, but what's the southern most chicago-land area fixie-friendly store? I'm in Bloomington-Normal, potential looking to make a trip up to the burbs or the city for some stuff.

Sacramento, CA fixed/ss friendly shop: The bicycle business

Mostly a high end road shop but they all own and ride fixies to work every day. They have an online shop with a lot of track stuff competitively priced too www.thebikebiz.com

They don't always have everything in stock but they are happy to get it for you, even if it's not on their website or anything they've ever really stocked before. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about ss/fg. Their mechanic is crazy good (he was like 8th in cyclocross worlds in his day) and knows everything--serious.

I've been buying parts from Don Patrol Velo Garage in California. The prices are better than most and they shipped my stuff free. I had questions on crank length and their tech was a big help.

We've added a track/fix gear section to our site. It's still kinda new but we're adding product and tweaking it every day. We've got it set up so you can build quotes on complete bikes....please come check it out. Thanks!

Holy crap!
No other LBS that knows single/fixed in L.A. except Bill Ron?

Seriously any experience with LBS on the westside (Santa Monica, Culver, Venice, etc.)?

That's more than most shops in small-town USA. If you can go down to Boston, you will find some, but otherwise I would go to the LBS and have them order stuff.

Any recommendations for a shop in Spokane? Not even for a fixed gear bike right away, but for a shop that has used road bikes that could eventually be converted to a fixed gear?

I just moved to eastern Washington, but don't know Spokane at all (yet, but I will soon as it is the nearest city). I'm looking for one of those places with a room in back stocked with tons of old, cheap 80's steel road bikes with horizontal dropouts for $100 or so.

just wanted to say that i had my first ordering experience with Business Cycles this week, and holy **** they're on top of things.

i called tuesday afternoon, probably after the fedex shipping cutoff for the day, ordered some bars and a cog, and they showed up on friday afternoon. and that was with regular ground shipping.

highly recommended.

There aren't any bike shops near UCI. I've only seen 4 fixed gears around UCI, and one of them was under me, so I think you can say that the trend hasn't caught on there yet.

gotta give a major shout out to Mock Orange Bikes in Winston-Salem, NC. by far the coolest shop and nicest people i've ever dealt with. if you're ever in the area, definitely check them out. a couple of the owners ride fixed, and they're pretty heavily into SS and fixed mountain riding too.
