Fixie on TV :-)

Your cog is slipping.
Having been involved with riding fixed gear bicycles on the road since the Johnson administration, and having spent a fair good bit of time at/on the track since the early '70's I never heard a fixed-gear bicycle referred to by my coaches or teammates as a "Fixie" for the last few decades. Perhaps I missed it.
I believe that the term has entered the language recently, along with a generalized infantile diminution of nouns.
A generalized etymology source on "Fixie" has:
"fix·ie
ˈfiksē/
noun
noun: fixie; plural noun: fixies
A single-gear bicycle that has no freewheel, so that its wheels cannot move unless power is applied to the pedals.
Origin
early 21st century: from fixed-wheel bicycle or fixed-gear bicycle ."
Perhaps we moved in different circles (pun unintended) but it's interesting how the language evolves, with some unfortunate turns of usage at times.

Ya know, I have no idea where the word came from. I just remember hearing it sometime in the early 2000s, and it was always one of the fair weather, wanna be messenger fanboys. Basically, people I hated. So it's annoyed me to this day. I guess it's kinda dumb, but everyone feels that way about SOMETHING I'm sure. Maybe not. I don't know.

Quicksilver > Premium Rush Both were corny movies. But Quicksilver, in my opinion was much better.

Watching a bicycle related movie from time-to-time, wrenching on a C&V bike in my man cave, and reading and posting here... gets me through the off season.

When i still worked as a messenger, i couldn't stand the critical mass bike idiots. One Friday every month, they would gather downtown, during the tail end of the work day, while we were still working, and basically clog up traffic and piss off the whole city. So when Monday morning came, and it was back to work for me, drivers were more aggressive and cops were more generous with the trivial tickets.

Me too! But to be completely honest.... I may be more like the OP... and just happy to see bicycles on my TV. I don't even care if's just "murder she wrote" with Angela Lansbury on a bicycle (27 sec's into the video).

Yeah I know what you are saying. I guess to me, both movies were more of a messenger thing, and less of a "cyclist" thing. Quicksilver being more of an underground/outlaw type movie, and the newer one coming along and jumping on the "fixie" fad after some nerds in a conference room somewhere decided that it would "sell". I've always been a fan of keeping things underground, as opposed to watering it down with the "everybody is welcome" idea. Sure, in cycling, everybody IS welcome. Everyone can get a bike and ride, and talk on forums and show off their new spandex and whatnot. Premium Rush did for messengers, what Green Day did for punk. Made everyone welcome, and opened the door for countless idiots saturating the market so no one else could make a living(in Green Days case, it just watered down a genre, and took what was a sharp stabbing object, and made it a spoon).

The only critical mass I have done was in Chicago in November last year, and it was police escorted. We got a lot of honks but it was mostly positive stuff, at least I hope it was.

You sure it isn't the alley cat stuff that pissed them off, and not the critical mass? Bike messengers and bike delivery as a whole has a bad rap. All it takes is one rider who rides recklessly and it ruins it for everyone. I live in a smaller town. There are no messengers here, but there is a restaurant that does bike delivery across from the campus. There is an older guy who rides for them, and is pretty reckless. They received numerous complaints about him running red lights, jumping the sidewalk, splitting cars, riding the wrong way on one way roads, etc. I often see him riding on the main road here as I am riding to work. I had one guy ask me at a light if I delivered for the restaurant and if I worked with the "a-hole who rides like a ******." Mind you, I am riding to work in regular clothes, messenger bag across my back, but the driver assumed that because I was on the road and sort of looked like I might deliver, I would know him. I have met the guy, and he is alright. He gives bikers a bad name though, and where I live, there are not that many of us.

Yeah man. I put on a dozen Alleycats here in Cleveland and never had trouble. they are usually on the weekends, not during the week. There aren't a ton of messengers here. And for the most part, the cops didn't bother us, regarding bike stuff, until the cm stuff started. I always jumped sidewalks, split lanes, ran red lights, etc etc. I wouldn't have made any money if i didn't do those things. But, i was also cautious(in my own way, anyone whose ever been a messenger knows what i mean) and i didn't do those things in front of a cop, blatantly. So that guy asking you about the "guy who rides like an *******"? That's one guy on a bike. Did you ask him if he knows (long list of A hole drivers), because, he's in a car, so he must know everyone who drives like an a hole? haha
