Tybee Island
I'll be on vacation on Tybee Island, GA from July 19th to the 25th and I'm looking for some riding options. I've never been there before and have no idea what to expect.
Does anyone have any suggested routes nearby? Would be great to be able to base the loop out of the condo on the island but with the size of the island and road in/out of there I'm guessing that might not be a real option.
Anyone here ride these roads and how are they?
Are there any cycling groups/clubs out there that welcome non-locals?

Tybee is FLAT. Everyone rides bikes there. There is a short bike trail that runs from the island toward the mainland. Not much of challenge. If you want a group to ride with you may have to go into Savannah. Have fun.

I wouldn't ride on Highway 80 for anything, love or money. Too many fast, drunk, inattentive, careless drivers on two skinny little lanes.
The island, while fun to cruise around on, is not conducive to fast riding.
Perry Rubber ,a bike shop downtown, used to have rides leaving around 8AM on Saturdays. They may be able to direct you.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to check out that shop. I'm from West Virginia and I rarely get to enjoy any flat riding. If there is actually any enjoyment in that style of riding. I usually get bored out of my mind riding on flat straight roads. But I hate going a week without a ride. Therefore I plan to get out at the crack of dawn for some riding.
I saw info about that bike trail but is it road bike worthy? Looks like it's more for running or a beach cruisers.
By the looks of Google maps I was afraid 80 would not be worthy of riding on. But have seen on Strava that people do ride it. Most of my rides will start around day break and plan on riding less than 2hrs. I would hope that there wouldn't be much traffic on 80 at that time in the morning. For what it's worth I'm use to riding the hilly/twisty/narrow/no berm WV roads with a bunch of idiot redneck drivers. I'll access the situation once I get there and might resort to driving into Savannah to start my rides if necessary.
I've always thought it would be great to do a century that has less than 5k of climbing in it so I might even attempt that while I'm there if I can come up with a route. Biggest problem would be to keep from doing this
from boredom.

There are people that ride US 80 between Tybee and Bull River. There are people that BASE jump too. I won't do either. Maybe early on a weekday morning it may be OK. I've only seen it on weekends and later in the day.
Yes that trail is only good for jogging or cruising, not for a roadie.
Here's a thought though; You are on vacation. Relax for a week. Rent a cruiser and ride the beach. Get a rental kayak and explore the Back River and Little Tybee.

Thanks for clearing that up. What if I said I BASE jump? I guess I'm crazy enough to ride that section of road then. Well, maybe I don't BASE jump but I'm still sort of crazy when it comes to cycling. I know I ride places that I shouldn't but life is short and I want to enjoy it while I'm here.
I've tried to "relax" while on vacation. But all I end up doing is wishing I was riding my bike in areas I've never been. Being on the bike is relaxing to me, especially early morning while the rest of the family is sleeping the morning away. Personally I'm not a big fan of beach vacations so the bike is a way to make it a little more enjoyable.
For what it's worth we actually talked about renting a beach cruiser and strolling down that trail.
Renting a kayak sounds like a good idea. I just might do that. Like I said I've never been there before so any suggestions for entertainment or must see/do while I'm there are appreciated.
