I live in Grayson Co. and ride a Raleigh Cadent. I usually ride in eastern Grayson co around the Millerstown,Big clifty area.Have you ever rode in the RACK ride sponsered by the Grayson co tourism commision? I rode the 65 mile ride in August.They have a 15,32 and 65 mile ride and it is usually the first Saturday in August.

We live in Ga right now, but we will be moving to Columbia in Adair County (just SE of you) in a couple of weeks...we bought almost 60 acres there last summer. I am new to biking...so new that I haven't even purchased my bike yet! We (my husband, son, daughter, and myself) are currently shopping for bikes and have been sufficiently confused already by the many options! How many gears do we need for the rolling terrain of south central KY? And is a heavy bike the end of the world for riding any distance? (I am loving the Pashley Sovereign and the Batavus Old Dutch but have read that they are as heavy as tanks! I just really love the traditional look.) I have already heard that the weight of the bike makes all the difference, AND I've heard that it's only the weight of the wheels that matters!?!
I would appreciate any advice and comments!

Yes, that part of Kentucky can be challenging. Weight of a bike can make a difference; but, with so many light bikes at or below 15 pounds comparing with that an old Schwinn at over 30 would make a difference. Then again the lighter bikes are designed for speed and racing. Don't get too caught up in the speed issue so long as you all are enjoying the experience. I would try to find a bike shop and speak with them in regards to the bike, safety and suggestions on routes.

we are only 50 miles from you in hart co this area of ky offers many miles of rural roads to ride but the hills can be steep we ride 21 speed singles and tandems

By the way, we ended up with Trek Navigators; functionally, they have been fine. But, of course, there's none of the traditional look that I had wanted!

Hey there, just wanted to tell you that there is a bike shop in Greensburg. It may be a winner for maintenance or what not. I've never been there, but have heard positive things about the guy. The owner is an avid mountain biker. I think he is open Monday thru Friday evenings only. Anyhow the guys name is Andrew and his number is 270-932-1449. I just thought that may be a local option, since we live in such a rural area. I am a road biker and live in Campbellsville. Take care, Wilson

Definitely check out pedal the planet on Richmond road. I have bought two bikes from them and have never regretted either one. They have lifetime free tune-ups which will be huge for a first road bike (until you learn to do it yourself).
