I want to thank Extort for organizing and leading the ride, and I want to thank Nosra451 for allowing me to suck his wheel essentially the entire way. I didn't know the way... yeah, that's my excuse. Actually, I seriously have trouble maintaining the others' flat ground speeds otherwise.

Things learned in my last few training rides:

1/07: Pace myself, and don't worry about how fast others are. Chasing dog hair up the hills made me really sore for the rest of the day. And that was only 38 miles.
1/08: I can do it. 68 hilly miles wasn't so bad. Learned to open up an energy bar and eat it while riding.
1/14: Work gets in the way sometimes. Oh well. Such is life.
1/15: If I'm following Nosra451 up a hill, expect to be slowly left behind. No matter how tantalizingly small the gap may seem, don't try to close it. It just isn't going to happen. Extort (and thus OC Roadie and Pico) won't tempt me to follow since he's so much faster going up. And spinning at about 100 RPM is a great way to keep the legs fresh.

Hopefully, I can get another training ride or two in next weekend, but I think I'll be ready to go regardless.

Dude you are the Energizer Bunny - you just keep going and going.... Glad you were there. The Other member was Graffix...something. Thanks for hanging out with us Roman. Extort has pics!!

I think it was graphbiz or graphicsbiz, something like that, it started with graphics and ended with business in some way.

How many pics is he going to post and when???

That's the plan for two weeks from now... to keep going and going.

The most memorable part of the route clearly was the tough hill we climbed, but close behind was chasing you down on Irvine Blvd (?) going into a headwind on a slight downhill. Extort wasn't choosing to keep up, so I decided to give chase. You looked so relaxed and seemed to be cruising, and yet I needed to get in the drops and work hard for 2-3 minutes to get caught up. Man, I really am a bit lacking in flat ground speed! I knew that that was the case, but the experience of chasing down a cruising Nosra451 nailed the message home.

Thanks again, Extort, Nosra451, and 1955. I had a great time. And my body feels great. (My mind doesn't, but only because I'm in the lab getting some work done tonight. Well, that and because estimated tax payments are due tomorrow.) I can't wait for the pie ride.

I ran our route today (I think I got it right without some of the detours ) in DeLormo's Topo and it comes out to over 6,000 feet of vertical climbing. The profile looks kind of sucky, but I don't know all the ins and outs of the program, there's probably a way to get all the vertical lines out, I just don't know how.

Don't drop out now.

Remember the friendly no drop policy. I, for one, don't plan on setting a speed records. Besides my belly is going to stuffed full of pie and ice cream that I'll be in no mood to race up any hills.

Thanks, Ralph, for the topo profile. I didn't realize we climbed that much today.

Sure, Pico. Somehow, from what I hear about you and OC Roadie, I find this hard to believe. And in any case, Palomar and Mesa Grande are before you stuff your belly with pie, so doesn't that mean that mos of the big climbs are before pie?

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. In that case you guys are screwed. (joking)

Seriously, the pie ride is for fun, not hammering.

Thanks for the profile! Please let me buy your first piece of pie after the ride. You have to go, You deserve to take a "crack" at it.

Woohoo!

I'd like to thank everyone for showing up today because we had so much fun cracking jokes throughout the entire ride. It was a little rough climbing those hills, and my lack of vision resulted in missing a couple turns so we did not climb as much as we should have.

I have posted the photos here.

Things I have learned from this ride...
eat, eat, eat...
ride more often to prepare for the Pie ride and Butterfield

Thanks again!

Hey, be honest, you saw me today. I don't think it's a matter of me not wanting to go, it's a matter of physically being able to make it up those "hills" down there and at twice the total miles. I had a blast today, but everyone would have to wait an unaccepatable amound of time for me and I really don't want to do that to everyone.

Good pics guys

Dude, I'll probably be in the back anyways so we will finish as long as we have the route slips . I don't mind waiting for anyone, I rather stick together than juts get all spread out.

Can't wait. This is going to be my last ride before I quit my job Freedom at last

after being humbled in my race against the rain and de luz canyon yesterday, i'm wondering if i'm even man enough for pie. i'm still going for 16'000 vertical feet next weekend, though. that'll be the real test for me.

Thanks for all the support, I'm still leaning towards not going and am VERY disappointed in my performance yesterday. I'm so out of shape and I don't want to walk up 10,000 vertical feet.

If the Pie ride is half as much fun as our ride yesterday, then I really don't want to miss it.

Maybe someone can "loan" me a compact double.

Ralph,
See PM regarding a compact double. BTW, I think it closer to 8,500', if that's any more encouraging

I'm thinking of taking a shot at it, too. As I have no clue how slowly I'd climb Palomar, I don't know if I'll have time for four climbs, though. I probably will be turning around after three climbs to avoid possibly descending in darkness. Any suggestions as to where to park?

I wish I had a compact or a triple for this upcoming ride. I'm running an old Campy 8-speed with a low gear of 39/26.........Believe me, I'll be stopping for breathers every 5 minutes on those climbs...
Besides, I haven't done any long distance riding since last Sept.....and that was like 80 miles on a tour bike. Yes, I will finish this ride...

Looks like I'll be going now thanks to OC!

And I must say, fun and hammering are very relative terms to the depending if you are the one having fun or the one being hammered.

HAHAHAHAHA
1955, you will do just fine on the Pie ride so I hope that you 'show us what you're made of by having a crack at it.'

All this talk about compact doubles and 39/26 has me worried about needing to schedule time with a knee doctor after the ride.

Yes, I'll take a "crack" at it, butt I'm not sure if you would want me to get some new bibs or just wear the ones you're all so enamored with. Althought they might be a little cold.

Do you know a good knee doctor?

Ralph, I've promised to buy jeans and shorts if I finish the ride. Maybe you should promise to buy new bibs if you finish.

The first time I did this, I was was on a 12/23 with a 39 up front (it might have been a 25, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't). You are a stronger climber than I was at that time. I made it, and my knees were pretty sore, but I think you'll be fine with your 25, or is a 26?

My commuter bike was in for the one month tune-up today, so I brought in my Roubaix, as well. Everything's been checked over and fine tuned, and the drivetrain's been cleaned and lubed. (I know... I should learn to deal with bike maintenance myself, but hey, in the meantime, I'm helping to drive the economy. ) One step closer to riding for pie.

Who are the guys in the pics?

1955/Ralph-Fixer (R?)-Extort(P?)-Jschen(J)

Who's Bill?

I use a 39/25 up GMR & Ride Around the Bear, will that be enough for the Pie ride if I show up? Or is the Pie ride much steeper?

Ralph = 1955
Phil = Extort
Jason = jschen
Bill = Nosra451

No clue about gearing relative to GMR and Ride Around the Bear. OC should know, though.
