There's a reason that start times around 6:30 AM have been proposed, giving us 11 hours of ambient light (including time for stops, regrouping, and the all-important pie).

Think about it... Climbing Palomar probably will take 2-2.5 hours as a group. Since Mesa Grande evidently has about half the elevation gain, it's not inconceivable we'll spend another 1-1.5 hours climbing over there. So we'll spend 3-4 hours climbing (not counting flat roads, descending, and stops) even before stopping for pie at the half-way point.

Scientists are realists Good thinking Jason. Holy crap - It might be dark when I finish. Thinking positive

I'll bring two light setups to put into a SAG vehicle, just in case we spend too long eating pie. They attach in about 30 seconds and last 2 hours each.

Oloveg, not training? you are my kind of rider! I am always determined to finish, and I do...

No need for all of you to get your panties in a bunch . This is going to be FUN (and challenging). I don't think anyone should need lights, we're going to have over 11 hours of daylight. If we can get rolling by 6:30am, or very shortly after, everyone ought to be able to finish by 5:00pm. I guess it's better to be prepared, so I'll put my light in a sag car.

Make sure you bring plenty of layers of clothing. I expect it will be really cold for the couple of hours (which shouldn't be too bad, as we'll be climbing for most of it) and then warm up to comfortable riding weather. I will bring whatever extra cold weather gear that I have. With the 1-3 sag cars that we're going to have, it will be nice to be able to shed clothing and not have to carry it. Hopefully it won't be as chilly as the Baldy ride that Pico and I just did. For that ride, I wore a long sleeve base layer, long sleeve jersey, legs warmers, shoe covers, head/ear band, and winter gloves. For the descent I added a lightweight jacket. Something along these lines are probably good for this ride.

Here's the location and address for the start:
Valley Center Middle School
28102 Lake Wohlford Rd
Valley Center, CA 92082

Oleg,

With no commuter traffic that morning you'll get there in half the time. I would carpool with you but most likely I will be in Costa Mesa from the night before. But things can change....
I remember someone else also from L.A. a couple weeks or so back, suggesting carpooling.

Yes, anyone with extra cold weather gear, please bring it along. I currently don't have stuff for below about 40-45 degrees (assuming no wind). It may well feel colder than that when descending Palomar!

By the way, my scabs have fallen off by now, save a few in my ear. So Fixer, I'll no longer be tempting you with vinegar- (burned by hot acetic acid) and salt- (sweat) seasoned scabs to eat on the climbs.

Well I'm out for sure now!

Got the news last night! Birthday party Saturday afternoon for the grandson! His birthday is Friday but celebrating on Saturday! I was probably too old to make it anyway!

Maybe next time!

hey ovoleg, i suggested carpooling a couple weeks back. If you can fit two bikes in your car, I'd love to carpool with you. i live in Koreatown. I can chip in for gas.

Let me know if you'd like to do that.

Otherwise, I think I'm gonna have to borrow a car (cause I don't have one)...it may be a tight fit in that car for 2 bikes though.

If it's any consolation, Weather.com shows lows of mid 30's and highs in the mid 60's for their 10 day forecast. Our news weather can't seem to accurately forecast 1 day, let alone 10, but I hope it's right.

Yup, the weather forecasts leading to the ride are looking good right now. I'll be continuing to make sacrifices to the sun gods.

the mere thought of how cold it could be that day is making my nose run =\

i have a pearl izumi vagabond jacket. i don't often need it, but i hope it's sufficient for those temperatures over a base layer/jersey/arm warmer set-up.
