That's what I'll do then, the map in DeLORME Topo must be wrong because it only shows 8 miles from Mills Rd. to the lifts, oh well. I was going to do try to do Newport Coast Rd. today three times but that rain just kicked my azz.

Naw I won't give up, but reading jschen's time up what I thought was only 8 miles really got me wondering if I was even capable of physically doing the ride. I usually just fly up and down the SA River Trail and haven't done hills since Bake and Torrey Pines in the '05' Amtrak Century and really not to many before then. I used to enjoy hills, but coming back to riding after 12 years off I never really went after them like before.

I may not get much time to rest at the stops from being waited for but you all are still on my dance card for the 28th.

Okay... some questions for you all. What should I bring with me on Saturday? I assume just the usual stuff:

bike/helmet/various clothing
tube/patch kit/frame pump
food/water
sunscreen/chapstick
keys/wallet/phone

Anything else I should bring? I assume there's no need to carry a lock around? And how much water should I be prepared to carry? Is 50 ounces between refills sufficient for this Saturday?

And what (if anything) can I do to help me prepare for the 28th? I'm not too worried about climbing, but I've never been on such a long ride before. The longest I've ever ridden was a self-planned metric century. That said, I ride about 50 miles on many Sundays. I assume that in the few remaining long rides I have before the 28th, I should get in the habit of eating more regularly since I currently don't consume much food on most of my rides. Anything else I should do in preparation?

There's a ride next Saturday?

I wouldn't worry about keeping up with the fast guys, you might just blow up early and then struggle the rest of the way. Set your own pace and stay consistent, try to lower the gears as low as possible and avoid dismounting up the hill. Slow and steady and you will get there.

I tried to keep up with a few fast guys and I blew up, after that it was a grueling 20 miles home

Yeah, the hilly metric tune-up ride led by dog hair. I have no intention of keeping up with the faster guys. As I have little experience pacing myself over really long rides, I plan to hang with the back group (hopefully) and ride just fast enough (if possible) that the other riders don't curse the day that Extort suggested that I come out for future group rides.

Here's an updated rider list for the 7th and 28th. Please correct me if I'm wrong, or if you'd like to be added. These rides are open to all, don't wait for an invite, just throw your name up here, and get yer pie on

Rider list for "Apple Pie", Saturday Jan 28th (starting in Valley Center, time t.b.a., earlier the better)
Me
Extort
Doghair
Pico
Jschen
Rockstar
Caligurl and Husband (sorry I can't do the "Hubby" thing )
1955
Ovoleg
Nosra451
Worker4youth
Jedi Rider?? maybe
My58vw - Driving Sag

We need to rally up some more this one!

"Pie" warm-up ride, Saturday Jan 7th (starting in Vista/Fallbrook area?)
Dog Hair
Jschen
SDrider
Extort?? (sorry I can't drive you down )

What do you guys think for a start time on the 28th?? I would think between 6:30 - 7:00am at the latest, this is going to be a long day. Later this week I'll post an exact starting address for Mapquest directions.

I'm game for an "as early as possible" start. Let's see... civil twilight on the 28th in Valley Center is at 6:20 AM. So perhaps meeting in time to get rolling at 6:20 AM would be good. Civil twilight at night is at 5:41 PM. That gives us a bit over 11 hours to finish before we have to break out the lights.

That sounds good to me, I think the first time I did this, we rolled out around 6:15am and finished around 3:00pm. I thought I'd hear from everyone, since some of us have a 1.5 hour drive to Valley Center. Ideally, I'd like to plan on arriving around 6:00am and rolling by 6:30am, anyone have any input in regards to this?? I'm getting anxious and looking forward to this one

PM me with your email, and I'll send you a PDF. I will also provide printed route slips at the start of the ride. I would to get as many cell phone #'s from you guys before the ride, so that I can have them on the back of the route slips. It might not hurt to have an emergeny contact # as well.

1.5 hour drive! must be nice! lol! not sure exactly where valley center is... but i'm assuming (yes, i know!) that it's somewhere around the animal park? so i'm thinking 2-2.5 hour drive! that's what we get for living in BFE though! last summer we got used to getting up at 1 or 2 a.m. to get ready to leave for rides!

however... set the time best for the majority.... i normally love early starts.. the early the better.. i'm just concerned about cold... (i hate to be cold! brrrr!) i'm still reserve the right to not come it i think i'm going to be cold! i need to go look back and see how long it took me to do BA... and that was "only" 114 miles.. this one's longer!

if we dress up warm in the morning... is our wonderful sag available to take clothes that we unload as it gets warmer?

julian pie... YUM!

can't do the warm up ride this weekend.. we already have plans to do another ride! i've been doing so many shorter rides lately that i'm a bit worried about a double metric! i need to get myself whipped back into shape! no laughing at me when i fall waaaaaaaaaaay off the back!!

You've said this twice now.... but I think that you'll be up to the task as long as you push yourself over the next couple weekends. I'd suggest riding a 70 mile, then a 90 mile ride to build yourself up. (70 is this weekend with Doghair, and I'll join you for a strenuous 90 mile ride the following weekend if you want.) I planned a route that is about 75 miles that I could extend to 90 that I wanted to try out, it is filled with the nasty hills of South County to prepare you for Palomar.

With a group this small I do not think that there will be a fast and slow group. I believe that we will be averaging a little over 17MPH for the day (my historical observation on century plus rides) and everyone should be able to keep up. Splitting the group only makes this harder for MY58VW to keep track of people, and we all want to sit down for pie together!

If this ride takes us 11 hours to complete then we are in serious trouble for the Butterflood!

He meant Kph . I think 17mph is pretty optomistic. My BA time to Onyx Summit was 7:13, and that was only what, 78 miles?

Umm, you sure you want to ride 90 miles with me? My average speed on my 50 mile modestly hilly rides is a bit under 16 MPH (not counting time stopped at red lights). For that matter, I've never done any closed loop ride at 17 MPH. (I should try riding a flat course again sometime... haven't timed myself on a flat course for quite a while.)

I think he meant Km/h...

If you guys are planning on 17mph average with hills over 100 miles, this is going to be some fun ride

I already planned on going so whatever happens---happens.

Keep in mind that that includes 12,000 feet of climbing but does not include 42 miles of downhill (and 7,000 vertical feet) after the final summit! I've never tried the ride myself, though I'm tempted to give it a try this year.

Edit: Oops... I think you're referring to 17 km/h. Umm, I hope we'll do a bit better than that.

Hmm, I hope Extort can tow both of us if he expects a 17 MPH average!

I'm getting jealous (and increasingly out of shape) as I will miss both the metric prep this weekend and the real death march on the 28th. I'm on the 3rd week of waiting for a frame replacement for my busted ride and have no idea when I'll have a bike. This ride will have to be done again in a few months.

Hey Extort,

When you say South County are you talking about Orange or Sandy Eggo county? If you're talking about Orange, I might invite myself along if that's ok, if it's SD county...to far.

I assume Extort means Orange. Extort, unless you can do Sunday, I'm afraid I'll have to turn down your offer. I can't take so many Saturdays off. Thanks for offering, though. If you can't do Sunday, I'm sure I can find myself a nice strenuous 90 mile ride around SD. And if you're inviting me for Sunday and don't mind a slightly slower pace than you typically ride, then I'd love to tag along.
