A BF'er was selling his DuraAce 7800 gruppo w/ DA wheels and DA pedals (well...all DA except for the Shimano compact crankset...which I was going to get anyway) at a price I couldn't say no to.

I think that all I need are a few bits and pieces (cable housings, those rubber donuts that go on the cables, the nipples on the end of the cables, headset spacers (if needed)...and I'll want a different computer than what I have now.

So the question is: do I used the DA wheels on the new bike, or use my Bontrager Race X Lites? Which are the better wheels?

Go with whichever looks better on the bike.

I will opt for whichever won't taco under the strain of the unleashed fury of my quads.

are the DA wheels with 7800 hubs? how much do you weigh?

depending on your weight i would pick the wheels with the higher spoke count and better hubs....probably the DA wheels. wheel flex is a speed killer.

Mo'Phat 04-02-07 09:18 AM

Bontrager Race X Lite Aero - 14/16 spokes, DT Swiss hubs, 30mm aero rim, 1,710g

Shimano DA 7801 - 16/20 spokes, 24mm aero rim, 1,607g

I'm on the fat side of 185 right now...working my way down to 170 by year's end. 165 in 2008, and I think that's going to be my fighting weight from now on.

Funny thing is, with the Bontragers, I hear pinging coming from the spokes on climbs...I've never had them trued, and got them new in September, I think. Maybe they need retensioning?

I am The Edge 04-02-07 09:25 AM

i'd choose the DAs.

Decided it was time to go compact:

Performance had it on sale, it was double points weekend, and I had some points I could cash in to boot. Nothing fancy, but since my Soloist has the standard FSA Gossamer w/ Mega-EXO crank, I'm hoping the swap will be really simple.

Now I need to get off my ass and get new bars and stem.

If you're interested, let me know. Since (like an idiot) I got an Aliante at the swap meet, have my other Team Pro and a Specialized Toupe, I'm saddle-bloated right now.

Roger that. Hearing that I'm 'plenty light enough' for anything makes me blush like a Japanese schoolgirl.

Scootcore 04-02-07 11:46 AM

So I got the Brooks in the mail today (gee, USPS is freakin' fast), and it says Brooks Professional on the side, which leads me to believe it's a Professional. But it has about 1/2" diameter rivets, like a Team Professional, and the box says Team Professional. Oh well. If I keep it, I'll put it under the knife anyway.

It's brand new. Maybe one coat of something other than Proofhide, and it doesn't even look like it was mounted on a seatpost. The wings are still stiff, and there's no butt dimples.

But I think it is to eliminate those side wings...for comfort = no rubbing and looks = it looks better this way!
And Fixer told me too!!:p

Just picked up a new Giro Pneumo helmet from the LBS. White with some silver decor. Of the ones I've tried, none of the Bell's fit my head well, only 1 model from Specialized fits ok, and only 1 from Giro; kind of weird. Since I had the same Spec last time, thought I'll try something new.

Happytime 04-02-07 05:16 PM

My Pneumo gives me a red dent in the middle of my forehead. My friends do this little hari-krishna dance when I take my helmet off, so I wear my Bell when I ride with them. :(

Woops, I better check mine out tonight. Since I like Indian food so much, maybe the waiter/waitress will give me a special when I eat at an Indian restaurants? :D

I guess each company uses different head types for different helmet models. My last one (Spec Aurora) is a perfect fit for me. When I tried their Air-something, I get pressure on both sides. On the Bell Sweeps XC/R that I've tried, the sides fit but there's a large gap between the top of my head and the helmet.

roadfix 04-02-07 05:30 PM

I've got a weird shaped head with protruding upper temples so most helmets don't fit me very too well.

Scootcore 04-02-07 05:32 PM

rudy project ayron has become the greatest thing in the world for my big ol' noggin!!!!
