Thanks ME-I think I will post a ride report. I'll try to get some pics of the ride too. From what I have read training~or over training~can lead to a comprimised immunity and something as simple as a sunburn-literally 1/4" by 1" wide could cause the chicken pox to activate in one's system when combined with other "stressors". I think I will also focus on some meditaion and visualization training during the next month-it couldn't hurt:- ) I hope your heat rash is better. I found that if I wear a De-Feet Un-d-Lite Tank under my jersey I stay cooler in temps over 90 degrees and keep out the bugs that tend to fly in when my jersey is unzipped. The tanks are spendy-about $35 but worth it to me. I saw you ride doubles-Have you gotten the Triple Crown yet?
Best of Luck,
Dave

I wear a base layer all year now...cooler in summer and warmer in winter..
check out Target...they have Champion brand wicking shirts...not bike specific but they work really well, and even seem to hold up better than the cycling ones I have....and they are around$12...I find I need to buy a size smaller than usually for best fit!

Thanks for asking, Dave. My rash is all gone, now replaced by a summer cold. If it isn't one thing, it's another! As for the Triple Crown, yes, I did get it this year and am working toward the 1,000 mile club (or as I've goofily and incorrectly referred to as the "mile high" club, which we all know is a much different type of riding club. ) I dig the double centuries, I must admit. I was on the fence after Hemet, but now after GT, I'm back caught in the throes of that illness one gets when out on long distance rides. I'm sure you can relate.

ME-
1,000 Mile Club-way cool. When I lived out West I got to ride The Eastern Sierra Double, Davis Double, Devil Mountain Dble, Knoxville Double, Death Valley Dble, and Seattle to Portland (as a double). I heard Hemet is a tough double. I once rode a Fleche from Fresno to Davis which was beautiful if not hilly. I really miss riding back there( not Fresno per se). The people you meet seem genuinely into riding fo fun-not so competitive like the East Coast. Best of Luck on the 1,000 mile Club-what are the rest you have planned?

Dave

Thanks for the tip $ 35 is a bit steep especially if I wear one every ride etc. I'll check out the ones at Target- did you get a style name?

Oh, so you are formally from here? Your location says Knoxville - as in TN? I just came from there and don't get me started. I did the Spring Solvang Dbl, Butterfield and Hemet. Hemet was the worst ride I've ever been on. If it had not been for my riding partner, a fellow BF member, I would have quit the ride (willingly). The roads were so dangerous and with the head winds, it just blew! I just finished the Grand Tour Highland (absolutely loved it) and am going to start whipping my sorry butt in shape for the Fall Solvang Double, which I've been told is significantly harder than the Spring one. I'm not sure about next year, but I was thinking of going for KOM, which means doubles will be on the back burner, certainly during the time I'm training for the climbs. Some people do both, but I'm too lazy!

ME-
I'm originally from Knoxville Tennessee but was living in Reno,NV and joined up with the Davis Bike Club as they were about 2 hours from where I lived and although Reno is a nice place to ride-California has more variety. I vaguley remeber the KOM comp-is that w/in the Triple Crown-like the Triple Crown Stage Race? Parts of the GT-High Route and The Butterfield looked beautiful. I never took the time due to the long drive from Reno. I also want to ride the Mulholland Double as I have some friends in Ventura who say it is beautiful. There are very few doubles here in the South East. I know of only three full doubles but they are basically like a brevet-self supporting-as in the "rest stops" are at gas stations which is fine if the ride is free but why would I pay? Did you get to ride when you were in Knoxpatch?

Knoxpatch? I call where I'm from Fried Chicken Land - and it is Clarksville. There is a riding club there and they seem really nice, but when I got home, I tried out my dad's bike which is a hybrid. Although a great bike, it isn't my Patsy (Women's Specific Trek), so I knew long distance on it would be difficult. Plus, time got away from me, so no riding with the Clarksville cycling club. And, no, I wouldn't want to pay for that, but when there is nothing else, I guess you go with it. Perhaps more organized rides will start up in the Southeast sometime soon. Until then, I'm sticking to the roads in CA!

Ah yes- I've ridden a bit around Nashville. I heard there is a fun flat Century in Clarksville-maybe next year. I like the old " You fry it-I'll try it" addage about the South-it is true!
