well i am thinking of changing my attire to a white wife beater t-shirt, grey baggy and sagging pants with my under wear showing and a gold chain. maybe that would make me look less suspicious.
i am also going to start wearing a sign on my bike that says "this rider carries less than 1 gram of pot on his person"

Come on! This is California! They will know that you are lying if you have that sign on...

Wow, I've lived in South Torrance for 11 years and never been stopped by Torrance PD (on my bike -- car yes bike no). You must live a couple of blocks from me -- since my wife heard about the crime, etc.
I think it may just be an overreaction -- I think the Torrance PD gets worked up when a crime like that happens on their turf and they start to look for anyone that looks out of place. Perhaps it is the hair like someone else mentioned but if you were wearing full cycling gear then that seems a bit much.

A little OT story:
I was pulled over while driving with 3 other guys (four guys in a sedan) in Alhambra. And I mean the whole 9 yard.
Hands out the window, open door from outside, walk backwards, lay on the stomach. All four of us.
Turns out there is an APB for 4 Asian males with shaved head (which we have at that time) for armed robbery. After 30 minutes sitting on the sidewalk with handcuffs, they let us go.
BTW, so Happytime = the girl on the bus? Did I miss the memo?

Can you say racial profiling. Long haired Caucasian types can be profiled too. If you hair is less than one/quarter an inch in length or more than six inches in length , they is a special group. And if one had an observable tattoo. It's a wonder they did not run you in. / Being handcuffed w/o cause, can you sue. ? I am pro police, too , but we all know in many a city, police are a little gun happy. I know they have a hard job, but still. / See if you had been looking like a yuppie cyclist in lycra, they'd had no need to cuff and frisk you.
