I think the Palomar store opens at 10 on weekends, maybe 11. We don't need the store unless someone needs food. There is the well water 1/2 mile before the store (turned off on 11/15 but I'll check it before the ride) and a hose bibb behind the store. We'll be mostly descending until the Lake Henshaw store.

I suggest we stick to the original Harrah's start and decide on Wohlford Rd. later. At least until I drive out Valley Center Rd.
might as well just start from my house, at least I know the cars would be safer here then in parking lot all day off Valley Parkway. Base of Lake Wolfford is roughly 3.5 miles from my complex and there is more then enough parking out here to handle a decent group. Its all flat til the base with about 1/2 dozen lights

I think we can all hold out til the store at Henshaw plus it's cheaper then the one on top.

Just finished printing the original routeslip and typing a new one with the Harrah's start. I'll get the mileage tomorrow.

Anybody had a problem with water on the ride? I (partially accidently) rode Highland Valley Rd/Bandy Cyn/Hwy 78 last week and ran out of water. The first store I saw wasn't until I almost joined up with E. Valley Parkway.

We've never had trouble with water on this ride, but we've also always had roaming SAG and a water stop at the end of Bandy Canyon. My suggestion regarding water is as follows:

Top off at Arco gas station in Ramona. More convenient than Circle K on original route slip since it's on the correct side of the street and it's at the intersection where we have to turn anyway. One should be able to make it to Escondido on two bottles in winter. After getting on Citrus, there is a gas station (not sure offhand what brand... one of the major brands) on the left side a little bit later. That makes for a decent location for a final stop before heading out to Lake Wohlford.

There is a school at the intersection of Highland Valley Road and Archie Moore Road that has water fountains in the playground. It was open today but there have been times when the gate was locked.

Of course if it rains you can just open your mouth.

Rain will cancel the ride.

The light rain we had last night put enough snow on the ground that I turned around 2 miles from the Palomar store.

Yes. At about 4500 ft there was a light dusting of snow. By 5000, there was 3-6 inches and I was in low following a set of tire tracks. The truck did a couple of slides in turns so I did a 6 point turn and doubled back.

Do they make snow chains for bicycle wheels?

I got 2 blocks away from the house this morning and realized I forgot my camera.

Also, drove to Harrah's on VC Rd. It's safer to keep Lake Wohlford Rd in the route.

Okay, that's it. If it's raining, I'm going to go as far as I can safely go and then take a pic.

I think I can safely go farther on a bike. My car has summer tires on it right now, so any snow/ice would be a serious problem.

I don't think so, but they do have studded tires. Putting those on my bike is against my SoCal religion.

Sorry, but I'm out.

/now, though, I can blame it on snow. I'm out because of the snow.
