Cold Weather Cross Training (Jump Rope)

Well, when Gina asked if I wanted another bike (29'er) I said no but I had been thinking about a jump rope. Been about 15 years since I used one but I need something to get me back into shape. Not bad for $10!

I got it so figured I'd give it a try today out in the garage. Like I said, been 15 years so it's sloppy but a darn good workout. Getting in a good 4 minutes of jumping made my legs hurt more than climbing 5000 ft on the bike haha! My heart was pound so loud that I picked it up on the recorder haha! Not till you start jumping around that you realize your tummy is bigger than it should be. But Hey, even Rocky started somewhere!

Few years back I could jump forever. today I almost died with an actual 4 minutes of jumping time. That's 4 minutes not counting the screw up time having to get re-started. Give me a couple of weeks, I'll be jumping 10 no problem.

Ow, my legs hurt!

That's good rope technique. It appears that you did some boxing in your earlier days. That's how they do it. I remember Roberto Duran when he was a young lightweight, he used to squat down to make it more strenuous and then get back in the upright position.

Do you want a jump rope platform?

Hey that's sweet! I don't have that coordination or stamina. That appears to be something you did A LOT of in your earlier days. I know rope measurement is critical but I bet the actual jumprope itself is pretty important - you know, bearings and all that stuff.

I don't know what a jump rope platform is but I do have a few step aerobic steps. If it's anything like that, I'd kill it with my wieght.

Haha! I've just always been active, working out one way or another. I competed in several sports over several years but I've always been athletic. Funny though that lots of people thought that I've boxed before. No, just punching bags and skipping rope for conditoning back in the day. But who knows, maybe I am a natural. When I was 12, we had several boxing matches in the neighborhood. My older brother was 2 years older and always seemed to get his arse whipped by kids his age. After I was done with my age group, I'd go whip their arses for beating down my brother haha! When I was 15, my 17 yo brother punched me in the face. I punched him back twice making a bloody mess out of his face. That was the last time I ever had to defend myself at home. I've been punching bags since I was about 11 or 12 and it helps.

As you can see, I discovered bikes and gave up the iron. Someday when I'm 55+, I'll start pumping again!)

My weight room years ago (only shows some of the stuff) I had a nice bench, utility bench with preacher curl one side and a pec deck on the other, legs, hex dumbells in sets from 5 to 45 lbs. Squat rack, 2 olympic bars, curling bars, 600+ lbs of olympic plates. Heavy bags an speed bags. It was all just to stay in shape for sporting competitions. After 15 years of competition in several sports and leagues/tournaments, I just got rid of the stuff and the shelves of dut colleting trophies and decided to do some bike riding.

Back in the day when I actually used to train for sports. I was coming up on age 30 in the picture.

This was my first time with this rope. Just bought it a few days ago. The handles are 1/2 lb weights with ball bearings. Works nicely, it's adjustalbe in length too but I used it right out of the box. I do think it will work better about an inch shorter on each side, but this was an experiment since it's new and my first time with this one.

Ropes I've had in the past weren't adjustable so I think this one will be cool when I get I figured out.

My Dad bought us gloves and ropes when I was about 9. Brother was 11 so I got pounded alot till I was 12. After that, Dad bought us punching bags and stuff.

I remember back in the '70s

there were public service ads showing Ken Norton jumping rope with the caption: "Jumping Rope is for Sissys"

I agree, I'd rather do a 2,000 foot climb than try jumping for 5 minutes...

It's nice but you run out of air fast! I don't like to jump with the garage door open though, the noise attracts lookie- loo's.

It is a good workout. I did an MTB ride today. Warming up at the start on a flat section, I was holding a good 3 mph cause my legs were so beat from the jumping.

I switched over to cycling from running due to knee problems (wore out cartilege, bone on bone) Not sure how about jumping rope now, come to think of it.
