great neighborhood. congrats.

since we are on the subject of talking on the phone and driving, i got pulled over because i was biting my finger nails while i was driving. the cop thought i was on the phone. i told him the phone was in my pocket and he can look at the log and he just said "how do i know you don't have another cell". so i ended up paying $180 for it. i was gonna fight it but i just didn't have the time due to work. so when you see a cop while driving, don't put your hands any where near your face.

p.s.....my aunt got a ticket for cell phone use too and she was scratching her ears.

Wait until you go up GMR, GRR, Mt. Baldy Village and the rest of the great rides in the local mountains. Last year we had a forum ride to the Village, it was a lot of fun. Hope to see you on the road sometime. Enjoy.

Since you are riding around inland Orange County. Look up Santiago Canyon Road, Silverado Canyon Road, and Maple Springs Trail (at the end of Silverado Canyon Road - gives you another 3 miles of steep climbing).

Are they both paved? Passed Silverado a couple of times but never attempted it. I usually do Ridgeline, Modjeska, and Live Oak Canyon when I'm on Santiago.

Thanks for the ride tips.

I tried out my work commute which will start in late August and it took me 35 minutes. Not bad at all! I climb Newport Coast drive, is that called Pelican Hill? The way home is much quicker as it is downhill though I didn't time it.

Yeah, Silverado is paved. There's a parking lot and gate at the top of Silverado Canyon Road. The trail beyond the gate is paved for another 3 miles. It's popular with hikers and mt.bikers. But road bikes are capable of riding it. There is gravel and debris on the trail, and there are a handful of 4-5" deep water crossings. Take these carefully and you won't fall. I always unclip both shoes before going through these in case I need to break my fall. Make sure your tires are in good condition because this trail WILL EAT your tires.

No Pelican Hill is Irvine Company's fancy resort. I have no idea who would want to vacation in Newport Beach.

No doubt many of us have ridden past Promontory Point in N.B. A good portion of those apartment units are rented by corporations. One of the perks for living there is the free weekend brunch served by outside catering companies. I can see how some will visit Pelican Hill as a weekend getaway or a corporation award for things like reaching sales goals. Even East Coast visitors who really don't want to buy a home will opt to just pay the daily hotel fee. Its no different than the customers who stay at the Ritz Carlton and Le Montage in Laguna Beach.
