Is it one of the MT-2's with the Campagnolo Record. My guess is that it probably is or else Chris woudn't have bothered with it. Those date from the 70's! Not sure who built them since the Maserati brothers were long dead by then!

Hey, let me tell you that LawnChair is a very common MALE name in a remote part of the world. Roughly translated it means "F U wise guy". Seriously, ever since I mentioned that I refrain from cycling for one week of every month, people have mistaken my gender. I do other things.

Oh you kid! Hahaha! Took me a day or so to figure out Lauretta is talking about my beloved Masi Gran Criterium, which I recently learned was made right here in Carlsbad where I live now:

Very cool Chris! I have a beloved MASI Gran Criterium made in Carlsbad too and it was my main road bike in the 80's to about mid-90's. Now it's my fixed gear bike.

Lauretta should remember it since I rode it when she rode her first century ride (Art was also along on this one). Long way on a fixed gear, but quite fun actually!

Pics man, pics!
What color? What year?
Mine's a 1984, but it hung up in the ceiling of my local bike shop for four years until I bought her in 1988. I could never afford the $1100 frame when I was making $4.35/hour bagging groceries at the &$^%# Albertson's Market, but when I came home on leave from the Killbot Factory, she was still hanging up in the ceiling at the shop. I was so happy to see her still hanging up there, I nearly fainted.
I grabbed the glass counter and waited for the headrush to pass, and I quickly wrote a check for it.
I built it up with all Dura Ace, and it was my racer and primary transportation during my 3 years in Holland. I never was worth a fart in a noisemaker in any of my races in the international class against those Belgians and Dutch, but every once in a while and old guy would smile at my bike and say "Masi waas het beste!"
So many great memories with that bike, I could never sell it. I just had it refurbished by Cyclart and they immediately recognized as one of the Carlsbad models, and after they checked the online Masi registry, they told me it was made in '84.

Mine was built in '75, originally black but I had it painted and decaled by Medici in '82. Since then it's been burgundy with yellow accents. Attached photo is of the Masi in it's current spec. taken by Chuck Bramwell on his fixed gear century from O.C. to Long Beach and back. My Masi jersey dates from the early 80's.

I put thousands of miles on this bike in the 80's and early 90's. Back then it was built up with Campagnolo Super Record and Record, Regina Oro 8-Spd freewheel, Regina chain, downtube shifters (also Campag) and a yellow Sella Italia Turbo saddle. Now the only Campagnlo is the crankset (same one I've had on various bikes since I worked at Bikecology in the 70's), seatpost and the front hub.

I bought the frame and fork (used) with record BB and Super Record HS for $250.00 in '82. I think the paint job and decals were $150.00 (I worked at a shop so got that at dealer cost). So far I have 3 fixed gear centuries on it (one with Lauretta and Art, Palm Springs 2010 and the Chuck Bramwell century), still ride it occasionally on club rides plus lots of home to the beach and back on the Coyote Creek MUP.

Still gets an admiring comment or two, usually from old guys!

Van Nuys, Van Nuys.
Please tell me you didn't cut off the derailleur hanger though.

Actually Chris, If you are that into California Masi's, you may be an old guy already. That said, you can rest easy knowing that the derailluer hanger, although empty at this time, is still in place and awaiting the day a derailluer returns. Ditto the braze-ons for the shift levers, still there (empty) though they are covered with little plastic caps so I don't scrape my legs on them!

Ah. Now I'm embarrassed for even asking.
Last summer I threw up in my mouth a little and made a serious effort not to say bad words when I saw a buttcrack-displaying bubble-gummer riding one with the hanger cut off.

Don't really have a thing for Cali-made Masis, just mine. I've only had two back surgeries, but I still unable to grow a manly beard like yours, so I'm more of a wannabe old guy.

Errrr... dude, I'm so down with the retro... you guys really knew how to make bikes back in your day. And your music was much cooler than ours too.

Hi Chris,

The head tube decal on mine doesn't have "Milano" on it, and neither did the one (decal) it had when I bought it. Are you sure yours is a Calfornia Masi and not an Italian Masi?

If your masi was built in 84 most likely built in San Marcos, they no longer built in Carlsbad after 1980.. The BB shell would have an SMC marking for San Marcos, CA. Some amazing builders went through Masi, the most famous being Mario Confente.

Thanks for the info socalrider,

Mine was built in '75 and has "MC" stamped into the BB shell so I'm guessing that stands for "Masi Carlsbad." Of course, I hoped it stood for Mario Confente . . . guess not! I used to see Mario back in the 70's ('77 - '78) at Encino Velodrome, always dressed in black, always smoking. Seems like a very long time ago now!

Notice the cool bike with the yellow "M" at 2:20.

On second thought, I'm ashamed to admit I don't know who those guys are either. (Yeah, that's it.)

"Breaking Bad," "Breaking Away".....you like things that break, huh, Chris?

I still have this movie on loan from Rick. (I'm taking good care of it!)

Chris, I'll bring over the movies Rick lent me and maybe we can watch some of them tonight while making salads. Let's see....we have "Triplets of Belleville," "Flying Scotsman," "Biography of Lance Armstrong," "Hell on Wheels" (about Tour de France), a bunch of Tour movies, Amgen movies, "The Tour Baby!"....

That was a life changing movie for me as a kid as well. But dang Chris, I never thought of myself as an "old dude". I'm turning 38 this month, maybe I need to start typing in all lower case and use bad punctuation so I can appear "young" again (ala cervelo4me). LOL.
