Mt Wilson New Years Day

Anyone know how far the group got going up?
We made it to Redbox yesterday but the road to Wilson was shut down and iced over with volcanic cinders mixed in.

Volcanic cinders?

Was there a volcanic event that I missed?

In the Angeles National Forest, they throw crushed volcanic red rock on the roads when it is icy/

Good to know! Now I can drive my old cars up there in winter without fear of them rusting away.

OP - your ride reminds me of the worst descent I ever did - from a snowy Mt. Wilson summit. (COLD!) The second worst, by the way, was from Mt. Wilson in fog thick enough to chew - with 10 ft. of visibility.

I don't know about Wilson, but today I rode 39 past Crystal Lake to Islip Saddle on dry roads. Islip is on the crest 1K feet higher than Wilson.

The group I was with turned around at Red Box. I can't imagine anyone going up on that ice, even if you could get up there the descent would be stupid.

If you're thinking about salt California doesn't allow it and there are only 15 states that do.

Good to know! I don't like snow much, so I have almost zero experience driving in it. (Last month at Crystal Lake was the first time in 20 years.)

I slept in and missed the ride, but four of my friends made it to the top, though at least one of them crashed (at very slow speed) on the way back down: https://instagram.com/p/T9U2QJQDYG/ https://instagram.com/p/T9VkLVQDY4/

That's pretty crazy! Wasn't the road closed? I was up there the day before (12/31) and there was just too much ice on the road. Pretty ballsy. Too much for me.
