More stupid kidback ideas

I was looking at the Precision Tandems website where the owners show the evolution of cycling with their family. At several points they had a homebrewed rear seat that mounted like a rear rack, with pedals. I wondered, is there any reason you couldn't put that on a solo? Doesn't seem like it. Maybe chain routing. They had the timing chain for the rack seat going to a regular kidback on the rear seat.

Also I was shopping this thing:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055PJUL0/...I1VGGTHMMK7PF9
And I thought, what if you replaced the foot pegs with a crankset?

Has anyone seen or tried a rig like either of these?

Kid is fast approaching 11mo, not walking yet much less pedaling... :-D

Having just gone through that age we are a year ahead.

If you want to go on rides longer than 15-30 minutes get a trailer. Fill it with toys and treats.

They are not going to sit up very long, or will fall asleep.

If you really want pedals don't worry about chain yet their feet will also not be able to spin for long

at 11 months they need to be fully strapped in as well.

That's what we have now. I'm planning ahead. Also, the trailer we have is a 25 lb parachute with a 20+lb kid and maybe ten pounds of water and diaper bag etc. being pulled with a cheap inefficient MTB. I come to hills and basically just winch up them. I'd like to improve the situation as soon as it's possible to do so, because if the family grows it's only going to get heavier.

Once a child is old enough to sit on a saddle and pedal, the best way to go is with a rear-steer tandem with a kiddie crank. The child gets a view and you can see what's going on with him/her and adjust before trouble happens. Added bonus: the looks you get when your "captain" is a four-year-old who is riding with his arms crossed on his chest as you ride along.

One of my friends made this awesome rear steer tandem for himself and his son. His little guy is under 3 in this pic. Of course, the fastest and cheapest way to get rid of trailer drag is to put a front or rear mount seat on your bike.

At lunch today my coworkers decided I should mount the rear seat backward and give the kid a squirt ***.

With a Yepp Maxi Easyfit, that would actually be really easy to do. You could just mount the Easyfit Carrier on your rack backwards and, voila, rear-facing rear seat.

No, you need one of these: Fuze Cyclone Water Blaster Bike Accessory - Walmart.com. Or maybe get one for yourself as well.

This is great! I cannot believe it is not commercially available!

Brown Cycles has some "stoker in front" tandems that are similar.

This is a kit that is supposed to attach to the protruding bottom of the seat tube of this company's balance bike to make it a pedal bike, and includes cartridge BB, 89mm crank arms and 28t chain ring, seatpost clamp to hold it on, and a bit of chain for 45 Euro. Obviously you'd need a different bracket, and there is no info on seatpost size or chain line. But it's a start, and it's not spendy.
