Yakima Sidewinder security
I purchased our Sidewinder around the same time as when we bought the Speedster almost 11 years ago. (Side note: we had to wait six weeks after we'd bought The Boat to bring it home. Yakima didn't have any Sidewinders in stock, so we had to wait for another production run!) Anyway, we had bought SKS lock cores for our Q-towers & the Sidewinder fork from Day 1, but not the 'Winder to the crossbars. So when I placed an order for new landing pads and crossbars, I also purchased lock housings for the 'Winder. I got everything together and when I got around to installing the lock housings on the car, they're 5/16". So what are the odds that I don't have a wrench or socket that size? While the Sidewinder stays on the car virtually all the time -- with or without the Speedster onboard -- it's never been stolen or vandalized. Guess I gotta go and get said wrench to protect the "investment" .

Normally, I'd agree. Except that both of our cars, as well as the bikes, are metric. In any case, though, I'll still go with a Craftsman wrench.

After one close call with the fork wiggling out of the QR while driving on the freeway, I now always make sure to use a supplemental cable lock to lock the frame to the roof rack.

That just keeps the casual thief away. You need four if you want to keep the thieves with serious lock picking skills out. Also, make sure you carry the wrench around with you...in case you ever need to remove (or tighten) the Sidewinder while on the road.

Are you going to use just one accessory lock? Accessory Lock Housing | Yakima
