Local news is reporting a bicyclist killed this morning, Arapaho at Greenville. Second hand accounts say it was a drop-bar bike with panniers.

This intersection is less than a mile from my house.

Sadness. Be careful out there.

My wife saw the aftermath of the accident on her walk to work from the DART station.

According to the news the driver did not see the cyclist who was stopped at the light
due to sun directly on horizon on Arapaho.
As much as I hate to say it, I believe this is truely an accident and not the result of
negligence/stupidity on either parties part.

Cyclist's name has been posted at Dallasnews.com. I won't post here out of respect, but generally the news won't post it until after the family has been notified.

Condolences to all affected, including the driver who seemed pretty shook up on the tv news.

Yeah... not to start a debate but I have a different opinion re: the definition of accident vs negligent, and where the line betwixt should be drawn.

Anyway, I know that intersection well. Coming East on Arapaho it's a slight uphill to Greenville, that time of morning, this time of year the sun is directly in your eyes.

Let's be careful out there... take a different route, huh?

On topic: Looks like the guy that was hit was stopped for a RED light and was plowed into by a teeny in a truck. Wonder what the self-righteous morons who love to bag on cyclists for not obeying the laws think about that? My guess is he would be dealt with more severely had he not encountered the cyclist and continued through the intersection killing another motorist. Right now all hearts are bleeding for the poor teeny and how traumatized he must be.

Ive ridden through that intersection once. Its kind of scary. Very big as intersections go.

My wife crosses Arapaho there on foot on her way to/from work every day.

I used to ride through it on Greenville going to/from work. I noticed no issues, but then I was riding at a different time of day (11pm to work/9-10am to home), and going a different direction.

Man, I rode by that this morning wondering what the deal was. I take Arapaho over to Interurban and then Interurban south down to work. Scary, that could have been me.

Every time one of these accidents happens, what gets me is the callousness of the comments.

It's tragic. Somebody has died. Someone's brother, maybe dad, maybe a best friend, son. And, I saw some moronic comments on the dallasnews.com website. Insensitive asses, cowards, that hide behind an email ID or a forum screen name, etc. It really pisses me off.

My heart goes out to his family. I know they are overwhelmed with sadness and grief. Maybe we can do something for them.

Wow that sucks. At intersections I still act pretty paranoid, assuming no one will see me (or that I just won't register to them).

The rider is very well known in the North Dallas/Plano/Richardson/Garland youth soccer communities. He has done a great deal to help different leagues and organizations.

Such a shame.

I've been staying away from newspaper "comments" because they are generally so moronic, doesn't matter the issue. This time, it looks as if there are lots of "share-the-road" commenters. I feel better about Dallas for this. Anybody need a ghost bike? I have a non-rideable extra.

Good Lord. I just read the Dallas News article and that name jumped out at me. I haven't lived in Dallas for over 20 years, but his older brother used to coach my younger sibs in soccer. Very sad.

The driver, 18-year-old Matthew McEwan of Dallas, should be charged because the Richardson police Sgt. stated he was driving too fast for the conditions. Would calling and lobbying the prosecutor's office make a difference?

The Richardson police are referring the case to the grand jury. That's nice and all but I doubt a Richardson grand jury will indict the kid.
