Microshift: The bicycle tourist new best friend?

If you range over a few hundred miles, you are going to run across nearly every type of terrain that the planet has to offer. You have hit upon how a 2x system might be useful...i.e. for a known course. But once you get into the unknown, which is what I consider "touring", having a wide range with a good high gear and a good low gear is far more useful.

I am still building bikes on the 9-speed Shimano drivetrain with drop bars & brifters. I just scored a like new set of Ultegra STI 6503 shifters on ebay for the new build but had to pay a ridiculous price for them. Last year I bought a new set of 6503 shifters for closeout price of $200 and a new 9 sp Ultegra 6503 crank for $99. Those days are ending fast though and I am going to have to start looking at the Microshift hardware or rethink my whole touring drivetrain philosophy. Right now I have 3 bikes with this drivetrain so at least I can still swap parts among my current bikes.

Cycco, have meant to write a quick thanks about these guys. If I were ever to set up a bike with bar ends I would keep them in mind, especially with the 10sp aspect. I have ridden a friends bike with 9 speed dura ace barends and they have a nice solid tactile feel to them, which still might be worth the extra money compared to these, but I guess I'd have to try the microshifts to know how they feel.

I'm ready to change from my 9sp micro shift bar ends to Dura Ace hoping it will solve my rear indexing problems.

I was having problems with my Jamis 9 speed and it turns out that the Microshift shifters were actually 10 speed shifters. They were set up using an alternate cable routing at the derailler to make them compatible with the 9 speed cassette - see sheldon brown's site for details on alternate cable routing.
Anyways... I upgraded the RD and cassette to 10 speeds. And the shifters have been running flawlessly since, 1100 miles so far.

Was touring with a buddy this spring down south and his Ultegra 9 speed brifter finally gave it up. I think it was his right hand, but anyway after we got back he was having trouble finding a suitable replacement and ended up purchasing a Microshift brifter. I guess there are some subtle differences in the way it shifts but now after several months, he says he likes it and it has been reliable.

I've been running their parts on both my bikes for a few years. They seem to get good reviews on Nashbar, combined with being inexpensive, and for people who live outside the US, the absence of free shipping on basically all US orders compared to China and Taiwan can be 100% of the purchase, up or down.

summer. now have abut 4000 km. no problems. play very nicely with xt deraillers
and hg50 cassette with kmc chain.
have been putting together inexpensive bikes for friends here. (when you can buy
a frame for $15, how can you go wrong?) can pick up microshift component sets
for next to nothing.
for zample: shifter set, front+rear derailler, hg73 chain, sunrace cassette -- $27 shipped.
