I am thinking of doing a Loop Trip on my Surly LHT 10-2016 to 3-2017 Starting in
Oceanside, CA riding to Anaheim, CA stay at Motel 6 then in the Morning get on
Metrolink Train to LA, CA then Metrolink Train to Landcaster, CA then ride to Victorville, CA
to pick up Route 66 to Flagstaff, AZ then ride to Wickenburg, AZ then to Quartzsite, AZ then
to Niland, CA (Slab City) then up to Indio, CA to Riverside, CA then Long Beach, CA then back to Oceanside, CA or I will get on Amtrak Train to Sacramento, CA then ride to San Diego, CA


What type of Bike Touring trips you do???

Point A to Point B Trip?

All trips I take are loops, otherwise I never return home.

All my trips are Point A to Point A, with stops along the way. However, Point A may look a little different when I get back.

Couldn't agree more. I always do round trip rides. It avoids the problems of having to deal with shipping the bike around and makes it that much harder to find a reason to stop and bail on the trip. I have one option and one option only no matter where I ride to...ride back home.

You should do what what will make you happy. I don't know why on earth would yo do a trip what would make someone else happy**********?

I do both. If I am going to the islands or sunshine coast I get dropped off at one ferry and picked up at another. This avoids about 100km's of urban sprawl riding but allows three ports of departure and arrival. In the fall I hope to fly out to Winnipeg and tour back home. I chose this over riding out and flying back because I can more cheaply pre book my flight, knowing a definite departure date instead of buying a flight at the last minute whenever I arrive.

It really depends on the route you choose.

according to your posted schedule "10-2016 to 3-2017" you'll be touring for 5 or 6 months,
mostly during the winter (october to march). or maybe i misread.

looked like flagstaff was somewheres in the middle. i'm thinking they can get snow
starting as early as september.

flagstaff normally gets up to a foot of snow over the course of november.
and has been noted previously, this is an el nino year, so you can expect
a longer, colder, wetter winter.

Doing a Loop trip VS, Point A to Point B trip???

Though I don’t tour currently, when my wife and I were touring in Michigan and Ontario, we did loops out of Detroit. Our cross-country tour however was Point A to Point B to Point C. We were also moving to Boston, and flew to LA, rode to Washington DC (because we had a deadline to be in Boston), and took the train with bikes to our new home in Boston.

Nowadays on my long one-day rides I almost always do loops, thinking to myself, as [MENTION=251219]bikenh[/MENTION], this way I’ll have to fulfill my mileage quota if I get all the way to my halfway point.

That for this year an El Nino ends in April2016

I am planning to do the trip from 10-2016 to 3-2017 and Route66 is part of Moab Desert!

I typically like to do point to point tours sometimes without a pre-planned end point. Starting and finishing points of my tours have all been pretty far from my home. I don't really have anything against loop tours and may do one some time. To me loop tours may make more sense if you are circumnavigating a mountain range, a big lake, or the perimeter of a country (state?).

I've done both. It's sure nice to back at the car or home when you end.

However the last few years I've done organized tours which required taking a bus or train back to the start. Not all that bad either.
