Bikepacking North Georgia
The Tocoa River Swinging Bridge, part of the Benton MacKaye Trail.
North Georgia is swarming with butterflies.
Sunrise from the summit of Coosa Bald
Not the best site nor the best pitch but it was late and I was tired. The soil is only two or three inches deep and the stakes hit bedrock but I made it work. I found a well used campsite on a false summit about 100 yards further down the trail as I hike-a-biked down the next morning.
Cooper Creek Scenic Area
No drought in Georgia. Creeks and rivers were surging.

Great pics you guys! Hoping to head out next week to get some new material.
The shrine story reminded me of my own little faux pas in Japan years ago.
I went for a long jog following a sea wall between Nishi Akashi and Akashi and somehow turned into a large industrial area. Not so unusual as I had no idea where I was going. In a couple of minutes a group of angry workers were shouting and shooing me away in very untypical Japanese fashion. Turns out industrial espionage is a "thing" and the white guy snooping around their factory was not welcome!
Live and learn I guess...

It's really cool when you see butterflies swarming like that. It has a purpose, however. They are collecting minerals and nutrients for a spermatophore. You can often see them swarming like this on animal droppings, mud puddles and I've even had them land on my sweaty arms. The derivation of "butterfly" may come from a belief that they stole butter. Butter would make a very good addition to a spermatophore.
"Nuptial gift" I like that.
I was up in the North Georgia mountains again this week and again saw many butterflies. They could almost be grabbed out of the air as one rode. The population has been low over the past few years but I'm glad to see that they are coming back. Hopefully they will swarm my garden this year as in years past.

While visiting family in Nashville, TN recently, I managed a little 2 day/1 day trip on the Natchez Trace Parkway...
After a short 7 mile ride from my sisters, the Loveless Cafe welcomes me to the start of the Trace!
Garrison Creek offered a beautiful spot for lunch!
Jackson Falls was a great end to the day...except for the few miles back to my campsite.
While it may look like I'm the only one at the bicycle only campsite...during the night a lot of nature came around to welcome me!
Enjoyed my short trip on the Trace...hope to ride the whole thing one day!

Coming up the mountain, between Congress & Yarnell (both in Arizona), you can see Congress in the upper right corner. The closer stuff is, I'm fairly sure, the old Congress gold mine, which doesn't exactly look abandoned. 🤔 Right after I took this pic, I caught up to the guys putting shiny new guardrails on route 89. 👍

And this was this morning, after some way tougher mountain climbing. 😉 I got rained on yesterday, and slept in a bizarre little place, lol, but got up & moving around 6:00. About 10 minutes into my trip, I saw 2 does that were among the biggest deer I ever saw. Way bigger than mule deer. After they watched me coming towards them for 2 or 3 minutes, obviously NOT afraid, they ran down a hill that definitely would have killed me, lol, I don't know how they did it. 😲😳
