Sant Cugat Catalonia-- We were visiting my wife's cousin and his family who live in Sant Cugat, and happened to get there during a fun-filled festival. We left our bikes in Barcelona, and took the train for a wonderful day with family.

This was a competition to see which colles (club) could make the highest castells. The national record is 9 levels, and this one was 7. This was a co-ed team.

Oregon Coast- IMO it is the best part of the Pacific Coast Route.


One of my favorite pictures: my wife "dipping" her wheel in the Pacific on the start of our Newport, OR to Boston, MA Ride. I really talked her out of dipping her bike in salt water and convinced her to carry it over the sand back up to the road.


Boston-- 74 days and 3700 miles later.

hi Doug, this made me chuckle--it must be a lot of fun going through all the memories, and it's always fun seeing others trip photos, so post away young man!
The Oregon coast shot is one that sums up how nice that ride is (and wonderful wave splash of course)
And I really did smile about the salt water and sand thing, you know already that you and I are similar bike maintenance wise, and always think just that seeing folks doing that spoke nipple corroding, chain covering with sand tradition. Beach sand is a real pain isn't it?
Anyway, an up early today and had to respond.

Leiden is one of our favorite cities. We have ended 3 tours there, and it is only a short ride to Shiphol Airport. We try to get there a couple of days before our departure. It is a great place to explore.



I was standing on a street corner, on a popular route for the college kids, trying to get some "bike photos" depicting the bike culture of the town. It was an instant connection with the young woman on the back of the bike. She is looking directly into my camera during the 3 shots I made as they rode by. One of the photos is a favorite from the trip (not this one). The next morning I was on the same corner trying to impove from the day before. They rode by again. I was not prepared, and didn't get a picture as she waved. I spent another hour or so, but the previous day was hard to beat.

now on that note, Doug, re the Dutch gals riding by, didn't you sternly tell them that they were exceeding the weight limit on those rear racks!?

That one young lady could be my niece’s twin, if my niece had a twin. 🤔😉

I know the Dutch have a reputation for 'beeing direct', but speculating on a lady's weight with the suggestion it's too much might not be appreciated.

Btw, those old rear racks can sway a bit but don't break. But lately there are much more front racks, limited to 20 or 25 kilo but they appearently don't break either. The funny latest 'trend' is that lots of girls sit on it facing the rider, arms of the passenger leaning on the handlebar, just chatting like they have a tea on a small table.

That is not too surpising. Some guys are so good at it, they can do it with their eyes closed

Ages ago with my wife's bike at the time, she sat sideways on the rear rack and I rode, for only a few kilometres and I was super careful. I was skeptical but was surprised that all went well. Even the rear wheel spokes didn't complain, and that 32 spokes 700 bike is used by my daughter and still fine. I'm sure I've readjusted spoke tensions at some point, but other than a slightly depressed top of rack, everything survived.
