2009 vintage. Rounding the top of Looking Glass during a near 100 mile day from St. Mary Campground to Sprague Creek Campground in Glacier National Park. Logan Pass was still closed, so we had to ride around the park if we wanted any chance of riding some of GTS the next morning.

Favorite road name from St. Albans to Burlington. Didn’t have to ride it.

Got to take a day ride from Burlington, VT on most of the Colchester Causeway. At this time of years the ferry across the missing swing bridge only operates on weekends. Saw two great blue herons and an egret fishing for brunch.

Passed this relic on an unpaved road in VT yesterday. The sign advertises dances every Saturday night.

My wife's usual approach to downhills: get on the drops and go for it.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...586ec939_h.jpg The leaves are starting to change color already. Short venture last week. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d9d06592_h.jpg The nights are also getting cooler. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9a987111_h.jpg Not everyone complains about wearing a mask. Maybe if they were marketed as protection from flies, there would be less resistance to wearing them. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...18cc0dfd_c.jpg |
Doug, hear hear for the safely don't waste a kilojoule of downhill energy attitude! Leaves are starting here also, hope to get an overnighter in soon to get amongst said leaves. Cute horse avec mask shot.

Day 1: Marseille to Port-de-Bouc (2021-Aug-22)Strava - Day 1So on our day of arrival we headed into Marseille to get some food, ship our train bags to our hostel at the end and drank too many great beers and cider. The first day of actual riding we planned a relatively short day, which was a good thing since I hadn't managed to train at all in the weeks beforehand. The road out of Marseille to the West led us along a short stretch of uncomfortable highway riding at first but soon we were led into a beautiful national park and several steep climbs into some of the small villages along the coast. It was hot, we drank close to 3-4 liters each and ended our day in the small town of Port-de-Bouc only to be greeted with a small festival with various seafood! Well, after we had a big 'coupe de glace' (roughly translates to ice-cream sundae but it's much bigger than that) with lemon ice-cream and wodka. :D http://i.imgur.com/1ESYtkJ.jpg My friend didn't understand the meaning of "just a small one" http://i.imgur.com/PA9PkE8.jpg http://i.imgur.com/wzXcsTS.jpg Where we came from http://i.imgur.com/fl0o6uH.jpg Where we were going http://i.imgur.com/nhPAzcK.jpg Many speedboats zipping by http://i.imgur.com/LQlECGB.jpg Getting close to the final town http://i.imgur.com/Mr9HC5J.png It's late here so the update on day 2 will be tomorrow! |

Day 2 - Port-de-bouc to Montpellier (2021-Aug-23)StravaOn day 2 we had some distance to catch up on so we drove 141 km from Port-de-Bouc to Montpellier. We got up at 7:30 and ended our arrival in Montpellier in the evening on a terrace. This day went mostly through the beautiful Parc naturel régional de Camargue with its salt flats, flamingos and just general nice views over the sea. It did lead us over lots of rougher gravel roads that ended with the both of us getting a flat tyre. Another day where I was happy to be able to carry a lot of water since there was only one small village halfway through where we could refill our water and we certainly had to. For those planning a similar route I would suggest taking it in the opposite direction as we had a strong headwind all day. http://i.imgur.com/EYm4qcD.jpg View at the hotel http://i.imgur.com/6ttd4N3.jpg http://i.imgur.com/oLOqHT0.jpg Great roads for getting flats http://i.imgur.com/BB9qCD7.jpg http://i.imgur.com/7XnPZjh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ety4LKJ.jpg Also great views http://i.imgur.com/gfWx2HV.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Zf34T1f.jpg http://i.imgur.com/8hxBFY3.png |

Day 3 - Montpellier to Béziers (2021-Aug-25)StravaPeople in Montpellier asked us why we even wanted to go there. The truth is, it's halfway to Carcassonne from there. We rode the 90km to Béziers along the gravelly coastal bicycle path again and at some points I would just fly! My friend with his road bike tyres wasn't as enthusiasting as I was but we made good time. I had added some extra water carrying capacity to his bike on the rear stays with a set of Zefal Gizmo universal clamps and a cheap bottle cage. I liked it so much that we got some for my bike later that week. http://i.imgur.com/v6uvI53.jpg http://i.imgur.com/oAjIKwE.jpg Montpellier http://i.imgur.com/fz8TlGx.jpg http://i.imgur.com/F10m3Ti.jpg http://i.imgur.com/OZp61zB.jpg http://i.imgur.com/atlxPuv.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9UUPxd9.jpg http://i.imgur.com/rvd3uwV.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Qa0CCgB.jpg http://i.imgur.com/6ykXMtK.png |
