Big Sur temp bridge?

Temporary bridge: Photo #14:

PHOTOS: Dismantling Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in Big Sur - Santa Cruz Sentinel Media Center

Seems like the original bridge is surprisingly refractory with respect to the wrecking ball.

What's their plan? Just knock it down into the ravine?

Updates on the construction of the temporary trail are being posted on the Big Sur blog

March 14, 2017
Daily trail progress update.
More progress was made again today on the access trial work. Many more steps were completed in addition to continual work on the actual trail.
There was an incident on the trail today that involved unauthorized use of trail that compromised the safety of the trail crew. The subject was trying to gain access to Post Ranch for work during hard closure. Subject was on the north side a few switchbacks up the new trail. Subject was contacted by a State Park Peace Officer and was asked to respect closure. Per witness statement, Subject threw a duffel bag down and stated short cut. The bag weighed an approximate 40 lbs. and was loaded with metal tools. Subject was issued a citation for violation of PC 409.5 (c) entering a disaster area. Subject was released without further incident

I never realized that my daughter was right: I am really not allowed into her bedroom.

As I guessed when the collapse was first reported here, some form of provision would be up and functional sooner rather than later. Hopefully folks will respect the rules and appreciate that half a loaf, or even one slice is better than nothing.

Sad, but not unexpected, that there are jerks out there who don't get it.

As for knocking the old bridge down into the gulch, that' how it's done. The cleanup will come later as part and parcel of the new construction.

I toldja it wouldn't go quickly.

They are estimating $70M for road repair in Santa Cruz Co, and we have nothing anywhere near as bad as this going on.

I doubt anyone thought it would. But a crossing that's workable by foot or (carried) bike is up (if two planks counts as a bridge) and that's all that matters from a bicycle tourist point of view.

We have to look at the bright side, which is that with a bit of inconvenience, the entire stretch has been turned into a pretty nice bikeway.

That's a little creek in the Big Sur state park campsite.

(It was supposed to be funny. Disclaimer for any potential touri: Picture 14 is NOT really the replacement bridge.)

So, back to the key question.

Is there some kind of walkable trail around the failed bridge?

Knocking the old bridge down the gulch will have a severe impact on the wildlife below. It is not just a matter of picking up the old steel and cement chunks after the bridge is demolished.

This isn't nearly as spectacular as the bridge, but it is on a side-route to Highway 1 just a bit north of Santa Crud.

It used to be a lot louder before I let some moron at the bike shop touch it. A real buzz-kill.

I downloaded the Chris King ring-tone. However, I don't know quite what to do with it, because I refuse to own a cell phone.

For years I had a cell phone for business because I was on the road so much, then I quit. After being cell free for 10+ years I cracked last year and got one on a pay-as-you-go plan. Only 3 people have my number, and I spend less than $8 per month average, which makes it a cheaper alternative to maintaining my old land line.

BTW that CK hub may be a great training aid. With a hub like that you probably don't coast as much as otherwise. Sort of like a self-imposed fixed gear hub with emergency bypass.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I have seen a few highway overpasses in the process of going down around me, they dismantle them piece by piece on weekend nights with the highway shutdown or traffic diverted through the off/on ramps.

One of my daughters is a marine-environmental biologist. She told me that in cases of emergencies they get a pass (to a point) on environmental impacts. They probably have a biologist on site to monitor adverse impacts on habitats and wildlife activity (and that area has one of the richest eco-systems in the region).

Any endangered or threatened species would have been (one hopes) considered.

All of this drives the cost of repairs sky high. But I think that as a society we have made a decision to be good stewards and manage our resources/environment in a safe manner. That's just a cost of doing "business."
