Aero Bars?

My father and I are going to ride the divide next year and I'm considering aero bars for my 2017 jamis dragon slayer, except for the issue of space on the handle bars once the handle bar bar is in place as well as feed bags. Anyone have experience with this or used aero bars on the tour divide? Also any other tips or tricks to take on the ride?

Ian, I use aero bars on my distance roadie (Airstryke) and they can be used to carry a bag of less than 20 lb. I thought about trying them on a touring bike, but as of yet haven't.

Over two different years I saw a total of at least two dozen participants in the Great Divide MTB Race. Don't think one of them had aero bars. I certainly would not want to use them going up and down bumpy, unpaved roads.

Aerobars actually work pretty well on gravel roads if they are setup properly. My bars are set pretty rearward so I have a nice pivot to steer the bike with.

I tried a set on my ECR. It was a no go. Just about wrecked my taint something wicked with the seat I had on it at the time.

I have used aerobars on touring bikes since the early 1990s. While I admit that having a handlebar bag would be handy sometimes, I would rather have unobstructed aerobars, which I use constantly on long rides. I find other places to stow items that I might keep in a handlebar bag: under the seat, in a fanny back, in a daypack strapped to the top of the rear rack, etc.
