September Road Trip Report

With another week off but forest fire smoke and uncertain weather predicted I decided to try something a little different and drive around Western Canada doing hub and spoke day tours and some freediving. Base camp was my 2007 Dodge Caravan that I did a quick camper conversion job on, allowing sleeping space and room for my 1992 Marin rigid mtb touring bike, dive gear and other incidentals.

Day one saw me traveling up the Coquihalla and across to Kelowna, where I biked the Myra Canyon section of the KVR. After that I drove over Rogers Pass and through the mountains to just east of Calgary where I slept in a truck rest stop near Gleishen AB.

Day two had me continuing east towards Medicine Hat and then northeast to the Great Sand Hills of Saskatchewan where I again set up the bike for riding around the dunes. After that I drove west through gravel back roads to photograph small prairie towns, passing through Drumheller until I reached Calgary. Slept again in a rest stop.

Day three had me drive from Cochrane on Hwy 1a to Canmore and Banff, where I set up the bike to ride around the Lake Minnewanka loop and some non technical single track. Camped at the Tunnel Mt. campground and enjoyed the Sulphur Mountain Hot Springs.

Day four had me follow the Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise, doing a 5km hike up Johnston Canyon to the upper falls along the way. Louise was too busy so I set off up the Columbia Icefield Parkway, stopping at the summit to hike to the glacier and then on to Jasper, where I rode around the area looking for wildlife to photograph.

Day five I drove west past Mt. Robson and down through Valemount, crossing over Hwy 24 to 100 Mile House and then south again to Pavilion Lake where I free dived for a while. I then carried on through Lillooet on Hwys 12 and 1 through the Fraser Canyon home.

It was a great trip allowing me to take a lot of pictures and explore some areas I had wanted to get to on tour but did not have the time for this year. I also discovered more good routes for the future.

Below is a 5 minute YT slide show video of my trip and I'll post more shots in the all ready existing photograph thread.
