So i just spent about an hour searching the forums and it seems that people like the Garmin GPSMAP 76cx. I am interested in getting a gps system and had some questions:
My tour is half in the US and half in europe. This means i need to buy two different sets of map software from Garmin right?
I wont have computer access after I get to europe and am avoiding an itinerary so I would need the gps to make the maps for me. is this a good idea? does it work well?
anything else a GPS newbie needs to know?

Yes, will you have to buy two different set of maps from Garmin. Make sure the European version has the maps of the countries you are visiting in Europe. Make sure you get City Navigator and not MetroGuide if you want the unit to be able to auto-route.
I recommend getting a 1gig or 2gig micro SD card for your GPS so you'll be able to load up a ton of maps before you go.
The unit will draw out a route for you but it's not perfect. When you get your unit... Go to the setup menu then routing then click on "Follow Road Options..." Set the unit to calculate the route for BICYCLE and avoid TOLL ROADS and anything else you do want the unit to route for.
The GPS 76 Cx is a good unit for bicycling. The only negative I can think of is the size of the unit.

I have a different garmin, hopfully the unit you're getting is stable, because if you reset (unit locks up, whatever) while on your trip, it might erase your maps.

Check the maps as far as coverage of the countries you're going to. Coverage of countries like Spain, Czech Republic might be lacking with major cities covered better, etc. Germany, France etc no problem

I have a GArmin 76CSX and I love it. It is a larger unit but you'll find a place for it.
One thing I love is writing the track files to the SD chip, that way you're storing it in non-volatile memory.
One suggestion: you'll want to make sure there's space on the SD chip to record your tracks. Maybe consider getting two SD chip, write your US setup onto one chip, and the Euro setup onto the other.
