quick question for Jandd rack owners

I purchased a Jandd Expedition Rack a month ago. It came with a bracket to mount a reflector, or better yet, a tail light. I'm gonna buy the Extreme front rack soon. Does that come with a bracket for the front?

I'll appreciate your comments.

And another question. I don't have braze-on points on my forks, so I'll need clamps. Will the front rack be leveled using clamps?

I had both front and rear Jandd racks on my Fuji Touring (sold).

I don't remember if the front Extreme came with a reflector bracket, but it did have the hole(s) to mount one.

There's no guarantee that your rack will sit level--there's too many variables. However, by using the adjustable p-clamps (supplied), you will have a better chance of getting it level compared to using static braze-ons. The Fuji came with braze-ons, but I still had to use p-clamps to get the rack fairly level.

Hey ronzorini, thanks for the information. That is a cool looking bike you have [had]. Using the included clamps makes more sense than mounting the rack to fork braze-ons [if you have them] to get it leveled.

I have two questions about this rack, and I hope mijome07 doesn't mind me piggy-backing a question.

I am thinking about buying a Jannd Extreme Front rack (because I like the top platform). I will be using the P-clamps, because my forks do not have the "mid-fork" braze-on. None of the LBS in my area stock them, so I have to mail-order.

I want to install it on my mtn bike conversion (1989 Trek 950). I'm pretty sure I can get the rack level (or close). But when I look at the picture of ronzorini's bike, I'm worried about the clearance of the brakes with the second horizontal bar.

Will 26 inch wheels present a problem installing this rack? Specifically, with clearance to the brakes?

My other question. I am going to have my frame powdercoated. I went to the shop in my area that has alot of powdercoating experience (Ken's Powdercoating in Puyallup WA). I went there to see some of his work, and look at paint samples. Has anybody had there front and rear racks powdercoated to match their frame?

Also know that if you order a rack from Jannd directly, you can get it in silver if you ask and colo is a factor. There is no extra cost. I got one for my chrome Paramount.

I zoomed in on these old pics give you a better idea of the clearance.

My wheels are 700c with wide 37cm tires mounted. You're right, the upper brace did come fairly close to the cantis--I would be a little concerned that they might get in the way if you have 26" wheels. (The rack can't be adjusted up and down.) Maybe someone else can chime in.

I think powder coating the racks would look cool, but racks tend to get scratched up pretty fast. IMHO, fender1's silver Jandd rack really looks nice on his chrome Paramount!

Hi mijome07, below is a picture of a Jandd front rack on my Cannondale T2000. Even with the front braze-on's I still modified the rack to fit my bike as solid as I wanted it to be. I bent the bottom hangers in to get them to fit metal-on-metal with the bottom mounting holes, I don't like using spacers. I also cut about 1/2" off the bottom hangers to raise the rack so it would clear the fender at the top. In order to get the rack level I again bent the bottom hagers forward till the rack was level. All this may seem a little much but this is a great rack and I wanted it solid and not have any problems out on the road. I am happy with the rack mounting, very easy to get on and off so it was well worth the efford. I really like using the Jandd rack versus low riders although it does weigh more than I thought it would. Since I don't use a handlebar bag I mount a truck bag on the top.
I seen a guy with this front rack with no braze-on's and what he did was made some brackets that fasten between the rack and the front brake mounts. He seemed quite happy with this setup. He told me that he had used clamps but the rack always seemed too loose.
Hope all works out and happy touring.
