Not really. A few weeks into a cross country tour even an old fart (57) like me can maintain 20 mph on the flat without a headwind when riding with other riders and doing pace line. Obviously I am talking speed while riding not including breaks. There were quite a few days where we did just that on our xc tour. I have to admit that my daughter did way more than her share of the time on the front most of such days and the days where I did my share or more were infrequent.

A link to a Fox News clip on Ryan's progress. :)
Hope it works.

Glad to see he is doing OK.

Ryan refers to Fred; "an older gentleman who has inspired him and has ridden over 11,000 miles".
Is that 10 wheels??

ricohman 01-16-09 02:04 PM

Who is Ryan?

Yep

Curious, does anyone know exactly how much of the LA to DC he actually biked? Not bashing, just wondering.

I don't think there's anything definitive that anyone can say.. Only definite was that he certainly did the Los Angeles to Phoenix hop in a car to start the trip. Admitted multiple rides in the TX to LA area. Anything else I'd just chalk up to speculation. I haven't done the mileage math nor will I bother to try.

Yes, there's no need to bother, since only cheering and cheerleading is allowed.

I think tattoos are still acceptable :lol:

neilfein 01-17-09 07:27 PM

However much of it was ridden, it's still quite the accomplishment. I'm in the middle of three day tour in sub-freezing temperatures and icy roads. I keep thinking while I'm riding, Ryan is dealing with this a lot more frequently than I am.

I don't think we know. If I had to guess based on what I read I don't think there were any significant distances ridden in a car after the initial ride to Phoenix. I would be interested in more details as well though.

bhchdh 01-18-09 07:32 AM

Regardless of the details of the journey, he has done it. I just saw an interview on Fox, and he says he is even getting a ticket from an Oregon representative. He also alluded to a possible book. With the tenacity and temerity he has shown he may go far.

Nigeyy 01-18-09 07:37 AM

With respect, I don't think that's accurate; read the rules about posting on this forum. It might be good if you reminded yourself of this so you don't need to post what you said (just a suggestion).

Anyway, I too would be interested in hearing about the mileage content -most especially from a CYCLING perspective.

Maybe not properly stated to your satisfaction but it is 100% accurate just look at the rules on this thread posted by the mods, a few posts up.

I too would like to hear about a report on his mileage spent cycling, in a television interview and in the proposed book. After all , it was the journey that was the adventure. It doesn't matter how you get there. So then it shouldn't matter that it is a part of the story. I think it would actually make the story more interesting.

My post was both accurate and within the rules of this forum. I'll stop there.

Nigeyy 01-18-09 09:09 AM

The meaning of the word "only" must have changed since I last looked in the dictionary then! Nowhere does it state "only cheering and cheerleading allowed" in the guidelines; I'll be more than happy to apologize if you point me to where it does. Until then, I'll reiterate your post was not accurate and you didn't need to post it.

That's it, I'm back to cycling.

You really think Historian meant in the context of BF?
Thread has officially slipped into theatre of the absurd.

Nigeyy 01-18-09 09:24 AM

Perhaps he can answer that one! He posted it, not me.

I see "back to cycling" lasted a long time. :)

Nigeyy 01-18-09 09:35 AM

I also see with all your eagerness to post about Ryan you're suddenly reticent to answer the question of what you meant? I'll gladly take this through the email if you wish to answer or point me to where it states what you stated in the forum guidelines. Yes, let's get back to cycling.:)

Either the post from Stormcrowe was deleted or it's in the other thread. It was clear that criticism wasn't allowed. Anyone notice the number of postings to the thread dropped off a lot after the 'intervention?'

I'd find a book on this tour, or any tour, interesting, provided:

1. the author was truthful and straightforward about the ride;
2. the author buckled down and worked hard on his prose, and avoided the 'once and done' syndrome;
3. the author avoided ramming his political philosophy into his writing. This feeds back into point 2.

I think Ryan is entirely capable of writing a good book on the ride. If he chooses to, of course.

Here it is, from the OTHER Ryan thread titled "Touring from LA to DC....":

If you want to wish him luck, that's fine. If you would like to help him out, that's fine. if you have real information that will actually help him, also fine.

Politically charged, or insulting comments, or snipes, or ripping on him if he dares to grab a ride for a period? Not gonna fly. It's HIS tour. Let him achieve it however he does it. if you don't want to help him, that's also cool, just try not to hinder him or beat up on him. That's a complete and total lack of respect, so review the guidelines about respect, all of you.

Thanks

You're right, Nigeyy, that the guidelines do not say only cheering and cheerleading allowed. However, TheHistorian was correct that insofar as all-things-Ryan are concerned, only cheering and cheerleading are allowed. And it appears that the word "censorship" has been replaced by the euphemism "a bit of cleanup".

"Do you think now that you could make
me see the beauty of that picture?" asked
the Attorney-General. "No!" [Whistler] replied.
"Do you know I fear it would be as hope-
less as for the musician to pour his notes
into the ear of a deaf man."
