It's a debate with a twist, to be sure.

Did someone say parmesan?

On topic, it's all about tolerance and compromise. Know what really matters to you before you start, and know what really matters to the other person. I reckon I'm a pretty good travel partner, but one time a bad holiday experience totally destroyed what had been a good friendship. Irritation turned to anger and in that anger she hurled some very personal insults, based on things she knew about me from that friendship. After we got back, she tried to resume the friendship, but I couldn't -- the trust was gone.

Does anyone know of a book or an internet site where someone has surveyed people to uncover the exact or specific details of their versions of God (and perhaps of Nature as well, or the nature of the fundamental causes and forces in the universe or the world)? Their concepts of the infinite and of the totality could also be uncovered.

Kant observed (or at least thought he observed) that *everyone* has a concept of God (sometimes implicit), even if they are loath to use that word, and even if they are eager to deny their beliefs, explicit or implicit.

It seems to me that there are probably thousands of variants on these concepts.

***

Concepts themselves often get in the way, or collisions between or among concepts, and the reactions generated by them.

I would love to tour with someone who wants to experiment with dropping or being free of as many concepts and opinions as possible, and as much conditioning as possible.

Simple awareness and freedom seem fundamentally different from concepts (though freedom without the concept of freedom could also be interesting to explore).

Lol, and what do people have to say about Kansas! Aside from the bigotry and creationism being taught in the classrooms, what bad things could people say about Kansas!

It's flatter than a pancake. No really as a geographer I found this study very amusing:

Well said. I just got to this thead so I'm leapfrogging over all the commentary subsequent to that post. Pretty much all my touring has been with my girlfriend, and then when we got married our honeymoon was a cross-country trip, so that was probably a most optimal pairing. On the cross coutry ride I recall in particular two times when one of us was down and the other pushed us along. Though we haven't toured together for over twenty years, we did take up ballroom dancing and maybe that's also a situation where you are metaphorically "glued at the hip."

There's something to say for solo freedom. To sit on a big rock just because it looks cool and sittable. To fish a stream with no one jumping in, or jumping into a stream with no one fishing it. Scratching where it itches. Singing to one's self, no matter how bad the singing is. Eating the same damn food for days and days because you're on a kick. Travelling on nature's whim, and luck has it you're the smartest weatherman around! Never waiting on anyone, and no one ever waiting on you. Pushing up the steeps and no one else to answer to - "too steep" is the only answer and everyone agrees, it's unanimous every time.

And basically, listening to no one ***** but one's self. And if you don't like something you can do something about it, no argument!

Ditto SandLizrd!

I have only done solo tours so I can't say too much about touring partners, except I would be open to riding with someone that was reasonably close to my "style" of touring.

The only thing I would add to the previous post is that I like to meet people on the road. I feel having a toruing bud may hamper this aspect of my tours. Some of my most memorable experences are the ones where paths have crossed and stories are shaired! Some times I meet total strangers and with in a few mins. they seem like lost friends.
