"Carrying his stuff in a backpack?"
He was probably sorta advanced. Minimalist. Look at Ray Jardine's site.
His approach makes more sense than the guy I met from Alberta who have about 150 pounds with him. Sorta thing that wouldn't have raised much concern 20 years ago except the pistol part which has been a no no for over 50 years.

An armed and dangerous homeless guy, , hallucinating under the effects of Madd Dog 20 /20 ; riding a bike through Wyoming en route to Canada. He might well try to shoot some illusionary Rhinoceros with a sling shot , if you could not lock and load in time..

If over 50% of the time you can' t make light of our collective stupidity as a species, why bother. ^. Get those westerners loaded up with Bourbon during Hunting season, they will shoot at anything.

Mentally ill and homeless are not mutually exclusive, but that doesn't necessarily make him stupid or even evil. Maybe he wants to spend some time as a ward of a different state, for a change? But I'm speculating. I don't even know if Canadian jails are preferable to American ones....\
All that said... one of the things I love about touring is the people you meet. Well, some of them, anyway.

Just like in the 1770s and 1812, another invasion attempt thwarted. We'll get you sooner or later, Canada!

An armed American illegally crossing the border into Canada on a bike?
Could it be...
Spiro Bikopoulis?
