motor oil on the saddle........

My one experience with owning a Brooks saddle was that it was fairly comfortable when new, but nothing special. When it was thoroughly broken in it was decidedly unpleasant to me. So rushing break in would have just yielded an uncomfortable saddle more quickly for me. Once it got there, lacing it or tightening it did no good and I finally pitched it.
I would at least consider that before soaking the saddle in anything that will break it in more quickly.

Only two things you should consider using on your B-17 is Brook's own Proofhide, or Obenauf's LP. A leather saddle takes time to break in. That is just the nature of things. If you rush the process, you come away with a leather hammock... and you no longer have a saddle. The flip side, is that if you do things right and take your time, your leather saddle will conform to your sit bones and your rear. And you will have a comfortable saddle that you can ride for hours and last for years. Keep in mind that a saddle is supposed to be firm and supportive. It conforms to you, but it will never become a limp leather chair. It is supposed to comfortable support your weight for extended periods of time.
