My Softrde Traveler
1996 Softride Traveler. All comps upgraded from original RSX. Ultegra comps, Deore xlong cage der, Tektro levers, Shimano longreach calipers, Ultegra bar-end, Sram chain, Phil Wood BB, Sugino XD600 crankset, Shimano 12-36t 9 sp cassette. Smp 28mm tires and Zefal fenders. Omega 48h rear and 36h front rims, Alpine spokes, Blackburn frt rack and rear Delta Megarack, Selle long distance saddle, Topeak Road Morph G framepump, stock wb cages, Chris King headset. Frt and rr Ortlieb Roller Classics in blue Denim. This pic was taken mid rebuild. Broke my heart to sell.
Moved to New Zealand. I've other bikes now, but I'd toured the UK on it and was rebuilding to do the Transamerica.

No, I did done one major tour of the UK, France and parts of Denmark and The Netherlands. An entire summer. Fully intended to do The Transamerica in 2017. Things in my life changed drastically and I ended up moving to New Zealand and selling the bike. All the upgrades were well worth it. When completed I did a weeks tour from Pittsburgh to Cleveland and back. It was flawless.

Obligatory campsite photo during an overnighter this week in Ohio. Apologies to the purists for being non-drive side. Briefcase panniers are a bit unorthodox, but I had one that I use for commuting and picked up a second cheap from a BF member, so I've never invested in regular touring bags. Helps to have extra capacity since my 25 year old sleeping bag and 2+ person tent aren't exactly compact. Bike is a late 90's Bianchi Boardwalk hybrid frame that I built up as a drop bar bike mostly with parts I could find at the co-op. Wheels are mismatched because the front has a dynamo hub and I got it used already laced to the rim, but with no matching rear.
Other details for anyone interested - drive train is 3x8 Sora with chainrings reduced to 26-39-50 (from original 30-42-52) and 12-34 rear cluster. Brakes are Tektro CR720s that stick out far enough that they're basically resting on the top of the front bags. Racks are Jandd Expedition racks from a BF member. Tires are 700x32 Panaracer Tourguard, which I've actually found to be disappointingly flat prone despite the name. Maybe just getting old. Pedals for this trip were some MTB platforms from Origin8, but I go back and forth between SPD and platform depending on my mood.

Yes and no. I was riding Little Miami Scenic Trail (Bike route 3) which is the same trail as Ohio to Erie (Bike Route 1) until Xenia (going north), at which point Little Miami turns off towards Yellow Springs and then Springfield and Urbana while the Ohio to Erie tracks more easterly towards Columbus. nice setup, I was tempted to go the igh route on my troll, but decided to stick with a derailleur, but using a mtb triple for a lot of low gears.
Are you still happy with the Jones bars? I've been using them for most of this summer and fall, and have grown to like them a lot. Still like drops on the troll, but pretty happy with the Jones, although I havent toured on them yet.

1990 - a one week trip from Lake Geneva, through part of Switzerland, over Grimselpass, down through Interlocken. Stayed in youth hostels, so just a couple lowriders and a seat bag on the back.

Rohloff Speedhubs have a range of 526% You have a choice what speeds you want to cover based on the sprocket and chainring size you pick. I went with 16 tooth sprocket / 42 tooth chainring because I don't have a great need for speed.

Yeah, my bike was specially built for the Rohloff and has rocker dropouts to tension the chain. I understand your feeling about the chain tensioner - too much like a derailleur.

awesome trip and pretty cool bike. That front doohickie looks similar to that new rim generator, but different. I assume it's a generator. Pretty light setup. You went from where you where? I've done central but would love to get down to south one day if still able to one day.
what tires are those?

This photo was taken 1 December. The front doohickie is a Spin Up dynamo to keep my electronics charged. It worked very well. I first flew into Bariloche and rode the 7 Lakes Route then flew down to El Calafate and rode up to El Chalten and back. Tire are Schwalbe G One All Arounders 2.1" set up tubeless.
and yes, I thought they looked like G1s. For trips like this, I like tires of this width, and type of tread that works well in the expected surprises of surfaces and gradients.

Those are stoker knobs, normally used for the stoker on a tandem to have a place to rest like the hoods on the brakes. I put them there for the same reason, to have a riding position between the flats (aero position on these bars) and the upright position at the grips. They aren't really necessary on the Bosco Bars, but keep the hands totally relaxed during a long day.
