Question about mounting a Blackburn rack

My recently-purchased 1985 Letour Luxe had a nice alloy Blackburn rack with it, only thing is the owner had taken it off and lost the bolts.

Short of me taking it up to the hardware store and trying different bolts, does anyone have an idea what type of bolt/thread it might be?

Thanks!

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

The rack doesn't care what sized the bolts are, it is the fittings on the bike. Most are M5 but I have seen the occasional bike that uses M6 and some really old ones may use USS or SAE rather than metric.

Thanks, I'll try the M5 first. I did realize that the threads are on the bike, just didn't state it clearly. Thanks for the responses.

Not certain of sizes but I have a Blackburn rack from my Trek 720(mid 80's) and it does not fit my mid 80's Miyata 1000. The racks holes are smaller than the holes on the Miyata. I could drill out the rack but decided to get another rack.

There is also an SAE equivalent to M5, but I don't recall what it is right now. I got a box of stainless steel bolts in this size at my local hardware store for a really good price compared to the metric size. They also have Phillips/star heads, which I find more handy than those with Allen heads.

I have a little Tupperware container full of miscellaneous metric bolts. Some came off of bikes; some were bought at the hardware store. The threads for racks are pretty standard. One of my bolts usually fits. If I need more or a different length I take one with the right thread size to the hardware store and use it to find what I want. My local Ace carries metric bolts in stainless steel. No problem.

Most braze-on bosses on touring bikes all use the same size bolt, from water bottle cages to racks.

You all are geniuses. I went to my toolbox and pulled out some bolts that I had left over from a pair of pedal straps and guess what? They fit perfectly. I'll take those over to the hardware store and match them up in stainless steel. Thanks for the suggestions!
