Cycling around the great lakes
Has anyone ever biked round the great lakes? I know adventure cycling doesn't have a published route, and was wondering if anyone else knew anything about the region. I'm planning on starting by going north around Lake Superior, and, depending on how that's going, continue along Huron. As this is my long distance tour, if things aren't going as well as I'd hoped, I figure I can always cut back along the south shore of Lake Superior, and just make it a one lake trip.
I'll be doing this trip this fall yet, so time is certainly a reason I would cut the trip short. I used to live on the north shore of Superior, so I am well aware of the weather possibilities up there in the fall.
What I'm wondering is how I'm going to navigate without getting completely lost. My plan right now involves keeping a lake on my right at all times-- theoretically, I'll make it round, right?
When you're biking off published routes, do you just use road maps? I'm incredibly technologically impaired, but I saw a friend with an Ipod that had google maps on it. I don't want a GPS, but has anyone tried using an Ipod for navigation?
And has anyone biked in this area? As I said, I used to live on the north shore, so I'm familiar with the roads up there. But the rest of the lake(s) are a complete mystery to me.
Thanks!
