Esztergom to Budapest - which route is better?

Anyone ridden Esztergom to Budapest? The Bikeline map shows a route that runs mostly along the north side of the Danube, but it seems most people follow a shorter route entirely south of the Danube. Does anyone know how the routes differ? The bikeline route includes a couple of ferry crossings and I don't know where to get schedules.

I am in Budapest right now, on my way to Istanbul. Are you in the neighborhood? I followed the east side of the river from Vac to Budapest, and I found there were a lot of gaps in the Danube bike path.
