Cyclist shot, Oregon Coast

Sadly, this is not unexpected for those of us familiar with Coos County. The facts aren't in yet. It could be a local cyclist and the shooter and the victim could even know each other. Or, it could be an extreme manifestation of the bike-hate that is so common in this county. Still, it is worrisome.

Is the bike hate based partly (or wholly) on class? The reason I ask is that the '05 edition of Cycle Oregon went through an area that had in the past seen its share of road sabotage in the form of tacks and there was some concern of a repeat. I believe it was the day we climbed Larch Mountain. Some posters on the ride's forum opined that the animosity was due to locals' dislike of rich, city slickers invading their area.

Wow, this is frightening. It sure makes you wonder what would cause a 70 year old to whip out a gun. At least the cyclist is still alive.

Or know better than to use it was my thought.

The victim's name shows up in the locals search. That and the fact that they identified the old fool so quickly makes me think they knew each other before this, and that there's more to the story than road rage on the driver's part. But who knows? Stories like this are such small potatoes the local press may never do a follow up.

The alleged shooter...

From Flash Alert Eugene:

"Walker and Platz are known to each other and allegedly have a long simmering dispute stemming from marijuana issues."

Lance is probably right about this case. It's not about the bike.

That dude looks gnarly as ****. I don't think I'd mess with him even if he was unarmed, and I've got 45 years of youth on him.

That's all.
