Glad to know you're still plugging along. How is the wind in Wyoming? It was fierce when I was there. I liked the Tetons better than Yellowstone too, but the Yellowstone canyon and falls were spectacular. Geysers are more interesting than scenic. Lots of car traffic when we were there.

Yeah traffic in yellowstone totally kills it. If you hike back even 2 miles into the backcountry those crowds magically disappear. I too enjoyed the tetons, and spent 3-4 days at jenny lake! Did you hike into cascade canyon there? Beautiful place.

I made it at fort stevens now on the oregon coast! What a feeling! can't wait to do another trip next year!

Left June 18th cycled 4700 miles, never walked a hill. Did it on 400 bucks cash and a prayer! Lots of free camping and warmshowers. Tetons where the most beautiful, Montana had the worst head winds. It was super Smokey to. Wyoming had the best welcome to sign. People in Kansas where the nicest. Kentucky had the most climbs and dogs. Illinois was the hottest. Missouri was surprisingly beautiful.

So ... inquiring minds want to know ... what did you spend the $400 on? And how did you manage to eat, sleep, pay entrance fees into national parks, fix your bicycle, etc. on less than $30/week ($400/14 weeks)?

The only parks I would've had to pay where in Yellowstone and grand Teton but I took mu chances and never got caught. Eat oatmeal and peanut butter the whole way damn near and I only got drunk a few times. Alot of the camping the host never came up to me to inquire about payment. And warmshowers was a great help. I'm done now and am heading back to Portland. I was gonna go south but it's time to find another job. I got lucky and had no more bike problems after Virginia.

Yup, peanut butter was one of my mainstays on my trip, too! I just about got sick off the stuff -- and tortillas, for that matter.
I started in Seattle on August 28th and finished in Yorktown on October 27th of this year. We must of passed each other somewhere along the way. Before I began, I'd run across this thread and your blog. I was pretty amused (to say the least) by your travel by the seat-of-your-shorts style of riding. It brought back a lot of memories from the days I spent following a band called Phish around the country, while on a shoe-string budget.
The TransAm certainly isn't all unicorns and rainbows -- I'm certain you'd agree. I think your trip is a bit of a testament to the good that still exists for those of us who like to dream. Ride on, Joe...

Yeah it wasn't easy. I will definitely have a lot more money for my next tour. I loved it though, I'm gonna go on tour next summer, So I'm working 2 jobs and saving!
We might not have met because once I got to Missoula me and the other 2 riders I ended up riding with took the Lewis and Clark trail from Lolo, ID, to Astoria, OR. We wanted to see the gorge and Portland. I actually ended up in Newport Oregon. Found 2 jobs and a apartment in no time! Oh and I'm living on the Oregon coast!
