I just started watching it again for the second time, and I noticed that one of the filmmakers has the same last name, must be a relative, a niece or something.
About the "look at a girls mother" comment--you know, we dont have an idea of the context of the conversation they were having when he said that, I love films and filmmaking, and realize that documentarys often have a 10 to 1 shooting to final product ratio, so they may have been talking about more people being overweight, I dunno. The editing didnt allow the whole conversation to be shown, so we only saw that bit.

anyway, back to the viewing...

I really enjoyed seeing that again. And what I enjoyed the most was his "joie de vivre" his love of life and of being on a bike.
And yes, after seeing the film I took the time to read the webpage with various tributes to him, and it was written at some point that it was in fact his niece who is one of the women who made the film.
That was great that her and her friend did this project, he was quite a character and they did a good job of capturing his way of life and personality.

His behavior was as consistent with his views as he could manage. Very few people have both these attributes, which is what makes this video so fascinating.

His steadfast and correct views may also have contributed to his demise. Notice that he never runs lights, not even in the dark or fog. He simply doesn't have them, no doubt because he abhors the disposable, including batteries. In the night time interviews, the light comes from the videographer. The driver who hit him may truly not have seen him.

This ignores a small problem: it would have been impossible for him to live and do what he did without continually violating some of his principles. He ate packaged goods, for instance. So using batteries was on one side of the line, but packaged cookies were on the other. One has to draw a line somewhere. His was much closer to his ideals than the line that most of us draw.

He will not die. So many people will remember him.
Good summary and review.

That saying about 'if you want to know what a girl will look in thirty years, check out her mother' was a common saying in my youth and I'm sure I've said it myself many times.

If that makes me 'sexist' to someone then they're being 'ageist'.

Great video.

Old thread I know but just came across it after watching the video. Again!
I wonder what is that bike he is riding? I know it is a giant but I can't figure out the model. I would have expected an old guy like this to be mounted on a steel bike with DT shifters.
He reminds me of Jobst Brandt a lot.

From: Currently living in Oakdale, CA about 20 mi. NE of Modesto in the hot central valley.

Bikes: Surly LHTD with a YAK trailer. I may have to ditch the trailer and go to panniers but I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Did he perhaps die from a head injury due to not wearing a helmet?

We all have it within us but we shirk from it.

Last year when I looked up the local news articles about his death, they only mentioned that the accident he was involved in was with some farm equipment --truck, tractor, who knows. Poor guy died thats the bottom line without knowing more gruesome details, of which we don't really need to know.

Very, very true...so many times we self-limit ourselves.

Anytime somebody dies in a bicycle accident due to not wearing a helmet that needs to be publicized in order to raise awareness of the need for head protection. "Need to know" is a very relative term.
