It's an amazing Journal. A family of four surviving on $27.50 per day. And their time spent in South America is fascinating. I've always been wary on going through Mexico, Central and South America. Especially Colombia, with the cartel and drugs and such, but it sure is a beautiful country.

Mots animals killed on the road die from one big bruise and a lot of fractured bones. Not really good eating regardless of how fresh they are When you skin a road killed deer you can see that there is generally not much good meat to salvage. When you shoot one only the area around the bullet hole is damaged.

$25/day sounds about right, depending on where you are touring. In my experience, food in Mexico was much cheaper; Alaska and the Yukon ridiculously expensive. On the Alaska Highway I started counting calories, seeing which food offered the most calories per dollar. (Lucky Charms were a big winner).

I try to avoid paying for campsites. I find that roadside camping, or bandit, stealth, guerrilla, whatever you call it, adds a lot of flavor to the trip. My favorite campsites have all been free. I did 6000 miles touring over the last two summers and paid to camp twice. You'd be amazed how easy it is to find free spots when you're out there. The money you save on camping pays for that restaurant meal when you deserve it and that warm hotel when you need it.

When I started researching for my trip I stumbled across this blog.

5 Euros a day in 2013 seems pretty impressive to me.

That is remarkable and inspiring. I was riding this Summer along the Danube River somewhere in Hungary, worrying where I could stop for the night when I came around a curve in the path to see three young men in their bathing suits climbing out of a tent erected 5 meters off the path, eating bread and sausage. No one passing by seemed to give it a second look. That evening I stayed in a hotel, bought a restaurant meal. Who had a better time?

Them? I plan on taking a year off and heading to South America...I'm budgeting $1000/mth. I think thats very doable..
