Eastern route from Las Vegas, NV.
I'm looking for a route from Las Vegas to Virginia Beach. I don't like the Southern Tier route, and would prefer to stay near Rte. 66 as far East as feasible. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. This will be an unsupported tour with most nights spent camping.

Google maps, bicycle option, is your friend. Refine with www.rwgps.com. Move the route to a gps and/or state maps(order online from tourist bureaus.) Avoid cities of more than 5,000. If you're the social type, hook up with www.warmshowers.org for overnighting with cycling peers. The members can also advise you about questionable routing through their areas.
