It's most likely user error for the pedal clips or doing hot laps and pushing it just a little harder and/or being pushed into crappy positioning going into a turn.

I rode fixed gear for years in SF, Baltimore, and DC and never clipped. But, I also wasn't riding alleycats or crits.

Crit beasts are used to taking corners with certain lean angles. But they're doing it with the inside pedal up and not pedaling. But if you try to take a corner at the same speed/bike angle on a fixed gear, you're going to clip a pedal.
