It's worth a shot. Some things to consider:
- You can get 4 - 5 races within 3 hours on a typical track race day. That's lots of chances to learn.
- Generally speaking, a road "sprinter" would be a track "endurance" racer.
- Track racing will improve your road game. Lots of great road riders came from the track. Many use the track to hone their sprint, cadence, pack skills, and bike handling.
- If there is a track in your area, don't be surprised if some of the top crit racers moonlight at the track.
- Relatively speaking, your gear will be a fraction of the cost of similar quality road racing gear.
- If you live in the socal area and race indoors at ADT, a race will never be called off due to rain or heat.
- Your roadie friends will envy you because they think the track is balls-out scary, when in fact, more wrecks happen in crits than on the track. See point above about pack and bike handling skills.
- Your gear, your car, and the bathroom are no more than 333M away at all times

Not in SoCal unfortunately, but I'm only an hour from Dick Lane. It would be feasible for me to get down there most weekends for training and an occasional weeknight for a race.
When you mention an endurance track racer, what kind of distances are you talking? (Sorry, I'm clueless about track)
I definitely wont be winning any 200m events (I'm too small), but I can sustain a solid sprint longer than most, so endurance sounds ideal.
Really looking forward to getting down to the track! I just need to swap out my bars for drops and get a smaller cog. Really curious to see how well the new skills I learn will apply to road racing. (I wont be giving it up, just a shift in focus)

Oh, and:
Dear Carleton,
Why the hell can't anyone spell brakes properly?
Seriously, it shouldn't bother me as much as it does.
But, good god, it's everyone.

Minus the weight of your body. Not to belittle your workout... but leg press is NOTHING like squat. If you can even squat half your leg press weight, that's really impressive.

I'm not going to get lured into this argument. And yes, I can squat more than half of what I leg press. But, it makes no sense to load up all of that weight on my spine when I'm only in it to train my legs. Also, in cycling, legs work unilaterally (one at a time) as opposed to bilaterally as in squatting.

Before you can use the track, you are required to take a beginner class which teaches track rules and etiquette. Everyone, even CAT1 road racers, has to take it. It is to keep you safe and to keep you from screwing up.

Also, you will probably need more than one chainring and cog before you are ready to race.

Dear carleton, What is your thoughts on your current tiemeyer frame? A local just got one off ebay. Came with a king headset and steel fork.

If I had to guess, it would be that the forums had unique numbers. I've seen the URL structure change over the years when there has been work done on the databases. The URL used to be something like:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=178 for SSFG
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=41 for Road
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=33 for Racing
etc...
I would guess that new forums or sub-forums get the next available number.
Here are some of the early numbers:
Advocacy = 8
Mechanics = 10
BMX = 13
Commuting = 20
CX = 23
MTB = 26
Recumbent = 37
Road = 41
Racing = 33
General = 7
I could be totally wrong. But, the SSFG Marketplace is 282. It's one of the later sub-forums. It was created in 2009.

Hurtin' my brains. Trying to think of when I was lurking back in the day.
But yeah, things have definitely shaken around with each server update.

Dear Carleton,
I have never attempted to do any speedwork on the bike before (road or track). What would you recommend in the way of speedwork for say 4k pursuit? What kind of interval training do you do? Is there a cycling equivalent of a fartlek? Are there good track training resources that you recommend?
Thanks,
Wanting To Get Faster
