Sore shoulder - need help
I realized that my right shoulder has been too tight while riding for the last two weeks. I try to keep it relaxed, but when I forget about it, muscles become tight again.
I haven't changed my bike setup for a long time, and I've never had a problem like this until two weeks ago. I don't have any problem with my left shoulder either, it's always relaxed.
Now, it's very sore starting from my shoulder bone (I think it's called scapula bone) up to my neck muscles. My girlfriend did massage but she finally gave up. So, I started massaging myself
. It helps a little, but the pain is always there, and it's killing me.
Does anybody have any suggestions, please?

I had shoulder problems for years and had it worked on quite a bit. After the last go around from a 6 hour mtn bike ride, they did a full spinal exam and a dye injection MRI on the shoulder and it turns out I have scoliosis. Shoulder socket was basically fine. The muscles were getting so tight in my neck and spine it was pulling my shoulder over the socket and causing all the pain. I'm still having problems on my right side so I'm starting some pilates and yoga to work on my back and neck. I can't do any road rides over an hour or so without being in a bunch of pain. Mtn biking is slightly better since you move around more. If the pain is consistent and you've used the same set up for quite a while, I'd have your neck and back looked at.

That sounds really bad. I hope it will just go away. I think I will wait for a few more weeks before I see a doctor, hoping that its something temporary. By the time, should I use painkillers, or any muscle relaxing medicine (I remember my grandmother used to use those)?

Have you tried ice and hot pads? maybe you need to do some stretching as when I do really long rides (12 hours) I get a stiffness from my shoulder to the neck. If stretching does not ease the pain then I also would recommend acupuncture, (my doc is great and applies a little electricity just for fun!! )Hope this problem clears up soon.do not leave it for too long to get seen to if it doesn't!!! happy pain free riding

Thanks for your wishes. Still it's very painful, but I think its getting better. I put some patches that keep it warm, and thankfully my girlfriend continues giving massages like for one hour everyday. I also stay under warm shower, which seems to be helping too. I hope it will be better soon.

For what it's worth, I've had a pain in my right shoulder ever since I got my new Road Bike. A bike store mechanic told me the issue was likely from locking my elbows while riding. He said that caused pressure on a nerve that runs all the way up.

I have shoulder problems for one to two years following a bike accident. Nothing is broken but it is sore.
My solutions were:
Raised the bars to put less weight on my arms. That made a big difference but did not help aerodynamics.
Installed aero bars and use them whenever I am in a hurry, which is most of the time.
The resting on the elbows seems to not irritate my shoulder. I have done centuries that way.
Perhaps this will give you some ideas. I have little faith in MD's and try everything else first. Too many false positives in my and my families past.
