Here is an example. I broke my leg in 8 places last year. I had a surgery that allowed me to walk again. If I was in a 3rd world country I would probably have died of an infection or had my leg amputated. My grandfather is alive today because of a quadruple bypass 15 years ago. He is 92. He is in the hospital today...on oxygen. He would be dead as we speak if he was not getting supplemental oxygen.
People just 60 years ago DIED from urinary tract infections. How often does that happen today? What about STDs? How about cholera? Or TB? Or Polio? Or Salmonella? Or pneumonia?
If you think medical interventions have zero effect on your survivability, I suggest you forgo them for the duration of your life. How do you feel about that?

I think I originally sidetracked the thread. It was in response to the OP's claim that we are not healthier than people hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Not just that our diet isn't healthier (debatable), but that we aren't healthier in general.
Another claim was that lifespan has increased but quality of life is worse. Something I have a hard time believing when lifespan has more than doubled and we are generally healthy and active for most of that period.

Here, this guy explains it better than I can:

Are we really living or is technology keeping us from dying?

What about Oodiey (sp?) bread? Its gluten free, so wheat free, and tastes like regular bread. Yes, expensive, but I imagine you wouldn't want to eat too much of it anyway. Loaf of bread $2, Oody bread $5.

Never heard of that one before. Infact even google didn't return anything, but that might've been to do with the spelling. I'll keep an eye out for it though, ta.
