Peanut Butter and Jelly-Yes or NO?

I recently re-discovered the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich.

Who else likes PB&J?

Anyone want to tell me they're bad, or I'm ruining my health?

I took this photo at night. You can see the toaster over glowing red.

Toasted PB&J? You, sir, are truly exploring new vistas of dining delight. Might I recommend pairing that with some nice, cold chocolate milk?

But to answer your question: Yes to PB&J on GP's. Also, I've heard of folks wrapping up quartered PBJ sandwiches on long rides (an alternative to Clif bars, I'd reckon). Apparently, it provides carbs, cals, protein and some other stuff, that in addition to being sheerly awesome in its own right.

I can't have Peanut Butter or Almond Butter in the house because I'll just powerthrottle the whole jar down my neck like the crack addict that I am.

I'd reckon that so long as your diet does not consist solely of PB&J.........sorry - got lost in a blissful thought, there. OK, let's try again:
I'd reckon that so long as your diet does not consist solely of PB&J, you're not damaging your health. If you're really concerned, you could switch to natural PB (e.g. what you get at Trapper Joe's or Whole Paycheck) and crush some fresh berries, instead of the processed stuff.

Ditch the JIf.

Peanut butter should have either 1 Ingredient (Peanuts), or 2 (peanuts and salt). That Jiff stuff is garbage.

And Peanut butter and banana sandwiches are far superior to peanut butter and jelly . . . in every way imaginable!

my own peanut butter habit costs me at least a jar per week. though it's pretty exclusively on oatmeal for breakfast and directly on top of bananas for snacks.

Cinnamon Raisin English Muffins with peanut butter and your favorite jam.
Carry them in a sandwich bag for 100 mile rides.

+1 to all of this. Try Smuckers all natural crunchy and you'll never eat JIF again.

If PB & banana doesnt strike your fancy try PB & honey.

Many people take a PB&J sandwich on their rides for a mid-ride snack. I eat one before leaving on my rides. I use fresh ground PB (from Whole Foods or the local health food store) and honey or Agave. :yum:

The truth is, I used to eat Smuckers, but I had too many "oil spills", either trying to stir the oil , or having a guest at my house who didn't know about Smuckers (without the sugar, the oil separates and has to be stirred).

That , and I'm kind of on a limited income, and I can't afford the dollar fifty extra for Smuckers.

I also heard a rumor that the PB companies are reducing the amount of sugar, not for health, but because the price of sugar went up, and peanuts are cheaper than sugar.

And another thing, the jar of grape jelly in the picture is actually labelled "jam". I really don't know the difference, it tastes the same to me, although the jam might be thicker in consistency?

I want to share a tip, that I put PB on one slice of bread, and Jelly on the other, and I put the PB side on top of the Jelly side. This is because the Peanut Butter is thicker and won't run off.

My favorite PB&J is Smuckers with Black Cherry Polaners All Fruit.

But don't call it "jelly":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xBydH93eDY

That comercial ranks right up there with the "Grey Poupon" mustard commercial, as one of my favorites.

if you're lucky enough to have a trader joe's nearby, their 100% peanuts peanut butter is $1.59/jar.

solve the oil spillage problem by storing the unopened jar upside down till you crack the seal,

I tried that and it's never 100% sure to work. The oil can still squirt out. No, I don't have a Trader Joes nearby... correction, I did a google search, the nearest on is on South Oyster Bay Road in Plainview. I wouldn't waste the money on gas to drive there, and it's not a pleasant bike ride.

My local regular grocery store has a house brand all-natural (peanuts, salt) peanut butter that doesn't break the bank. It's Kroger brand. I bet your local grocery has something similar.

I like PB with Raspberry Jam, personally, but bananas are good too, as are peaches, nectarines, plums..... you get the picture.

The only reason I can afford the bike I bought is pb&j. I use blackberry jam but same pb. I eat a couple through the day for my lunch with fruit all the time. I often use them, or peanut crackers for ride food, or fig newtons.

My cholesterol dropped like crazy eating them all the time good and bad so I started eating almonds and cashews a lot now too.

You can use a food processor to make nut butters. Almond, peanut, you name it.

PB&J sandwiches are a staple at a lot of the century rides I've done; they're at all of the water stops. It's just that after about 4 of them I can't stand them any more.

Wow - I guess I'm closer to the ledge than I originally thought!

I'd reckon that we all have a saturation point for PBJ....some of us just haven't reached it yet...

Try Sunflower seed butter.

I also use a almond/peanut/cashew blend from Target.

I have them (usually) without jam. But if you do, get
one of the better ones like Smuckers Low Sugar.

Freshly ground peanut butter and grapes (cut in half). This is a great sandwich. No refined sugar, and the grapes add a really nice amount of moisture. I like peanut butter and banana too.

Yes, if you get real peanut butter, as was mentioned. We eat Jif All Natural, and there's no oil separation. My wife says it's the best tasting PB she's ever had, and it's definitely better for you than corn syrup.

You ride how much? Trust me you're not going to ruin your health. Let's look at the two strategies here:
  • Diet, no exercise. Go sit in front of the TV, eat a minimal TV dinner that's only got a little fat and 200 calories, take some vitamin pills. Quit the diet because you never have any energy, or you're just getting fat, or what.
  • Exercise, no diet. If you're just lifting weights or something, or 2-3 laps walking around the block a day, still getting fatter. If you're commuting to work, running 5k 3 days a week, whatnot, you're probably eating 3 times as much than you used to and still losing collected stored fat (it's migrating into your muscles instead of laying on your abs and arms).
  • Diet and exercise. Well, if by "Diet" you mean "Stop eating 4 cakes and 30 pounds of bacon a day," yeah, I think you need that. If you're picking at a small veg plate, you are freaking anorexic; eat more.

Seriously, short of getting unreasonable, it's hard to kill yourself eating "unhealthy" food when your body is constantly burning and moving anything you eat. Peanut butter has PEANUTS in it and jelly has FRUIT, plus sugar, plus carbs....

By the way, since you like creamy, go Jif Natural. It's got a touch of molasses in it, which gives a somewhat dark, cane-like flavor... it really stands out, but in the background. You notice there's something different and GOOD, but it just tastes like peanut butter. I like my stuff crunchy though.

Awesome stuff. Like the others have said I pick those with one ingredient. Peanuts.
Mass produced peanut butters are crap.
