Training for single speeders

My lone bike is a single speed mountian bike. I'd like to get some extra training time in, but more time on the trail just isn't going to happen for a myriad of reasons. I bought a cheap magnetic trainer to use with the single speed, but I don't love it. I don't mind spacing out and watching tv while I spin, but it's hard to turn enough watts with this bike to get a decent workout. So, I guess this is where I'm lost. I've considered trying to pick up a used road bike to train with, or it's been suggested to get rollers to use with the single speed. My budget is pretty limited, so I need a lot of bang for the buck. Anyone have strong recommendations one way or the other?

Bikes: i may have bike(s)

If you can put in time on the road, get a road bike. Although I prefer rollers to a trainer, it is not that much different as compared to riding outside on a road bike. You live in an area that you can ride most of the year, yes? Get out on the road bike and join some fast group rides too if you are planning to race.

Yeah, a SS MTB is going to be geared too low to work with many trainers or rollers, plus you need smooth tires which also cost money. Cheapest thing to do is get an old road bike, like a 70s 10-speed. Weight and quality won't matter. It just has to fit you. You might be able to find something at a thrift store. Run it on your current trainer.

Thanks guys! That's the direction I've been leaning in, now to find a cheap roadie.
