my question is, will a set of Aero bars go on the handle bars without me moving the shifters, they butt up against the stem?

Hard to say, some handle bars are the same diameter all the way across the top, and some are not.

If they are the same diameter far enough out from the stem both the shifters and aerobars should fit, hard to know with seeing the bike in person though.

my advice, forget it, go on Craigslist, get a crappy old bike, for $150, and then update/change shifting positions until they are easy to reach, and ride on that. stem shifters might not work to well with aerobars.

thats the problem here,there aren't many bikes on craigslist and when they do list them they're single speeds for 400 dollars, I'm looking at craigslist in Raleigh NC and found a handle bar and aero set up made by profile design for 99 dollars and he's willing to ship.

I looked on trisports also and found some aero bars are 2 seprate pieces which means I could mount them outside of the shifters untill I could afford to bar-end shifters.

I guess I agree with Sirious in that any given used bike is pretty equivalent to the bike you're looking at. Be patient, deals come eventually. I found my wife a very nice ~1989 Raleigh with 105 components with downtube shifters at goodwill for $15 when I lived in the midwest. I got myself a 8 year old Bianchi for about $150 off craigslist when I was in the midwest. I found a bike that was posted, called the guy and just said, hey I've got $150 to spend on a bike I'll come right now and take it(he had it listed for $250).

I don't know what your beef with Raleigh's craigslist is. I bet most of the bikes on there would sell for a full 50-66% more here in the Northwest. I hardly bother looking for good deals since moving here.

oh i don't have a problem with raleighs CL its just I'm 3 hours south east of there, wilmington is local CL that hardly has any on it.

Not sure I want to ride 3 hours for a bike but I might, I also own a 1978 Fiji that's being rebuilt and could prove to be a good tri bike with a little for-thought while building it.

oh and that Fuji is amazing!

Jetta, have a look at the ´tri bike on a budget´thread for some inspiration for converting your Fuji to a triathlon machine. Lots of good advice there.

As far as the Vilano bike you posted is concerned, it is entirely possible that you could move the shifters along the bar a bit (towards the brake hoods) and put a pair of clip aero bars on. But without looking at the bars it´s difficult to be 100% sure.

By the way, you don´t need aero bars to do a triathlon, or even to be competitive in a triathlon. I have been passed many times by guys on standard road bikes, but better engines than me!

As you are thinking about getting into the sport, my rule of thumb is ´spend as little as possible, and have as much fun as possible´. If your Fuji fits well, build it up nicely and just ride the heck out of that. Lots of advice over on Classic and Vintage if you need some help with the build.

Estimates are that 80% of your energy is to overcome aero drag. So, aerobars are highly encouraged.

However, I'd not get that bike. Get a used tri bike (a motobecane tri frame just sold on ebay for $125 buy it now). You could have a very decent bike for under $300.

You just have to keep your eye out. Also, CL has some great deals. Get an old road bike and then get some aerobars like these or these

Dont pay $100 for a pair of aerobars until you know you like the sport and get more serious.
